A new harness' shop has been open­ ed up in the Petty Block, by a Mr. Goud from Auburn. Mr. and Mrs. Goud have arrived in town and lia*ve taken up rooms in the Petty Block. The funeral of the late Erastus Rgnnie took place from his late resi­ dence on Queen Street, Hensall, on Thursday afternoon last. The flor­ al tributes "were beautiful, show­ ing the esteem that Mr. Rennie was held in this ■cq.mmunlty. A. bazaar and sale of home-made rooking will be held in the basement of the Carmel Presbyterian church on Saturday, December the 6tli and a Chicken Pio Supper will he sprved from 5 to 7 o’clock. In the morn­ ing a double quartette was given by Mrs. Sinclair, Miss G. Lamniie, Miss P. Elder and Miss M. Carlisle, Messrs T. Palmer, J, Passmore, W. Carlisle and Murray Campbell. The Welfare Yocttli Club of the Carmel Presbyterian Church held their meeting on Monday evening. After the devotional exercises a reading was given by M. Little fol­ lowed by an instrumental by Miss Blanche Mustard; a reading by Miss Annie Huiser and an instrumental by Irene Daters after which a con­ test was indulged in. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Rowcliffe, London Road, South, was saddened early Sunday morning when death claimed the life of their five year old son Laird Case. The lad had been ill with bronchitis and suddenly took a turn for the worse. It was just a year ago last May that they lost a little daughter, Ruth, and the sympathy of a wide circle of friends- goes out to the family in this hour of bereavement. The fun­ eral will Make place on Monday at 2 o’clock to the Exeter cemetery. A meeting of the Hensail Board of Health was held on Saturday ev­ ening in the Clerk’s office. Those present were Reeve Higgins, Doctor Moir, Sanitary Inspector Nelson Baftchford and village Clerk James Patterson. Dr. Moir reported to the board that there was no contag­ ious diseases in the village and the audience general health of the people was good. The ISanitary Inspector re­ ported that in only one case during the year where he had any trouble in getting parties to clean up their premises when ordered to do so.Af­ ter the reports of the two officials the meeting adjourned. The Young People of the Evan­ gelical Church gave the play “The Path Across the Hills” last Thursday evening at Mount Cannel to a large audience, Miss Cora Stahl, who is working in London, had a serious operation last week at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She js doing nicely. The regular meeting of the Wo­ men’s Institute was held in the In­ stitute Hall last week, November 20 th. The meeting opened with ’ Mrs. H. K. Eilber in the chair with the usual devotion. The Roll was called and the members responded’ 1 by giving suggestions for inexpen­ sive Christmas gifts. Business was transacted. The district director of the Crediton branch, Mrs. A. Amy gave the report of the meeting of district directors lfeld at Hurondale Delegates which attended the West­ ern Ontario Institute Convention held at London gave splendid reports these were Mrs. Lloyd England and Mrs. Arthur Amy. Mrs. C. Zwick- er gave instructive and interesting current events on hard times. Shir­ ley Young favored the meeting by giving a vocal solo. A social half hour followed and refreshments were served by the hostesses, Mrs. T. Trevethick, Mrs. Bert Kestle and Mrs. W. M. -Sippell. The last lecture of the series spon­ sored by the young people of the United and Evangelical churches of Exeter -and Crediton was given at Zion Evangelical ohurch last Friday evening. Heavens” by Dr. Kingston, of the Western University, auditorium was nearly filled. W. M. Sippell opened the meeting with a song service accompanied by the S. S'. Orchestra; Miss A. Gaiser was then called to the chair. Scripture reading by Rev. Moorhouse and prayer by Rev. Sauer; vocal solo by Helen Lovie.. With a few well chos­ en words the chair lady introduced the lecturer and for one hour the — was deeply interested in the wonders of our majestic uni­ verse as spoken and illustrated with slides by Dr. Kingston. .Vocal duet by Evelyn .Switzer and Virginia Moore. The Young People adjourn­ ed to the Sunday School auditorium below and were entertained with a contest put on by Rev. Hagelstein. Refreshments were served by a com­ bined Young People’s Committee of the Crediton churches, .Shipka and Brinsley. Golden . /A very Aniversary hour last Sunday at the “Eilber” home on Main Street, Crediton. The honored couple was Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eilber. It was the 50th an­ niversary of their wedding day. (Mr. and Mrs. Eilber graced the foremost places at the table as also their son and family Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Eil­ ber and daughter Bernice. The guests who were present from a dis­ tance were: Mr. Kuntz, of Exeter; Mr. John Kuntz, Susan Gurvin, of and Mrs. W. M Sippell. was pleasantly spent with a luxur­ ious dinner, gifts and ceremonies. Mr. Eilber was a member of the Provincial Parliament representing South Huron from 1898 to 1919 with Hon. G. W. Ross, Sir James Whit­ ney and- Hon. Wm. Hearst as Prem­ iers. He has r^so been the manager of the Hay Township Mutual Fire Insurance Company for fifty years and still continues as its head. For fifty consecutive years he filled the office of Deputy Reeve, Reeve and finally Clerk, of Stephen Township and continues in the latter position. ,'Mr. and Mrs. Eilber are in fairly good health at the present time. They received a number of golden presents accompanied with complimentary remarks and wishes for a peaceful and long life’s evening. Mr. Eilber responded in a congenial and appropriate manner in which he usually proves himself the master of the situation. We hope he is feeling much improved' in health. The United Sunday School is making arrangements for the Christ­ mas tree, A very enjoyable time Was Spent in the basement of the United Church on Monday evening when the Ladies’ Association entertained the melnbers of the St. Marys Rotary Club to a banquet. The menu con­ sisted of fruit cocktail and turnovers roast goose, mashed potatoes, brown gravy, jellies, salads, sweet pickles and olives, bread and butter, celery and cheese, a.pple pie with whipped cream, light cake and. raw fruit. The Rotarians had invited several guests and all numbered about 100 were at the tables. Art Lord, vice- ..pres. ,o.f,.the club acted., as chairman and between courses the company joined in community singing led by Dr. Williams and Arthur Francis with John Robinson at the piano. A very laughable number was the silent quartette rendered by Dennis O’Brien, Bob Harstone, John Stork­ dale and Bob Northgrave- with D. Hansen, director. Bill Harrison an­ nounced the drive the Club was . making regarding funds for crippled children and Lome Eedy, in a very able manner spoke on the origin and aims of Rotary. Bill Hardy kept the crowd in roars of laughter by “Shooting the Bull.” “The Toast to the King”' was sponsored by all rising and singing “God -Save the King.” The toast to the “Ladies” was. replied to by Rev. Mr. Bell and the Rotary Club singing, “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” Dr. Jose thanked the Club on behalf of the guests and the meeting, closed- by singing “O Canada.” CREDITON EAST elimv: i KHIVA Mr. and Mrs. C. There were 23 members present. Mrs. Skinner presiding. The meeting -opened in t-he usual way and the twenty-third Psalm was repeated in unison. The Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Chas. Godbolt. The leaflets- were read by several ladies. Roll call was responded to by ? a quotation on Thanksgiving. A nominating comm­ ittee was apointed namely; Mrs. C. Johns, Mrs. E. Skinner, (Mrs. Chas. Godbolt, Mrs. Ed. Johns and Mrs. -Sher. Hunter. It was moved and seconded that the losing side in the ^attendance' contest should give an evening program and pay a fine of five cents. It was also. decided to have each member bring an article and buy an article, and a box with lunch for two at the December meet­ ing and, last but not least, their husbands. .Mrs, Thos. Bell gave a . very interesting talk on her trip through .the West .la^st..,year. Mrs. i Chas. Johns ’dismissed the meeting with prayer .and benediction. The Evangelistic Meetings which have been in’progress-In this church have been well attended and much spiritual benefit has been broadcast. Quite a large umber have made the Important Decision from the influ­ ence of Rev. Whiteside’s heart searching addresses which have a strong appeal. The singing by Mr. Leonard and' Mr. Whitesides has al- ho been a great pleasure to all who have heard them with the latter’s music on guitar and banjo. A men’s service on Sunday afternoon was largely attended over ninety being present. Those services will contin­ ue here each night this week at 7. 4-5 except Saturday. .Sunday morn­ ing the evangelists will be at Zion ■Church and through next week also, but -on Sunday night Rev. White­ sides will give his closing -address in this Church, service commencing jat 7 p, m. as usual. Sunday school also at the usual hour.
