Sweitzer and daughter Lqis of Detroit, are spend- si, week visiting at their home here, Mr. Wm. Simpson accompanied by his mother and. sister spent the week-end visiting relatives here. Mrs. Robtf Bontliron has return­ ed home after spending a week visit­ ing relative's in Detroit. The Old Age Pensioners in Hem- sail are receiving about $360,00 a month. This money is being spent in • Hensall amongst our business men and there will be no extra tax­ ation. The Varley serious Saturday and is now in the Seaforth hospital. , ■ Anniversary services were held in the United church on Sunday last. At the morning service Rev. E. M. ■Stewart, -of /Mitchell, .occupied the jpulpit and for the evening services Rev. A. E, Doan, of 'Clinton, was the speaker. Special music was given .by- the choir. Tn the morning a vio­ lin selection was given by Miss G. Lammie and a duet by Mrs. L. Hed­ den and Mrs. Goodwin. In the ev­ ening a duet by Mrs. Hess and Mr. Sherritt and a solo by Mr. Samuel Rennie. Mr. Doan- was a former pastor here and his. many friends were delighted to see him again. Death of Mirs, Thomas Pepper Another old resident of Hensall passed away in Clinton on Sunday June 8th, in the person of Mrs. Thomas Pepper. .Mrs. Pepper has been in poor health for a number of years and last fall she fell and broke broke her hip. She was taken to .-the Clintop Hospital for treatment .and after spending several months there, she was -taken to the home of Mrs. Livermore, Clinton, for nurs­ ing and at whose home she passed away. Mrs. Pepper was born in Twp. oh October 6th 1848 daughter of the late Robt. Fullarton Township and on _. _ Sth of this.year she would have been 82 years old. After her marriage to Mr. Pepper they farmed in Grey for a number of years and 25 years ago they left the farm and came to Hensall where since. Besides * leaves to mourn Wm. and -Chas. Hibbert being a Bell of October they have resided her husband she her loss four sons; Pepper of Toronto, George of London and James, of De- ioraine, Man., and one daughter, Mrs. Wni. Pepper of Tuckersmith. At the session of the County Council - held in .Goderich last week, it was . decided to issue debentures for $100, ’ ODO for ten years to pay for our JProvinical Highways. Skin sufferers— to be extended from Clinton to Winghum, The highway debt on the copnty up to date is $116,000 with >n>t the amount in the general ac­ count and. as th© building program is to be carried on for a number of years, the council thought it best to issue debentures for $100,000 and dear up the debt to date as the mill levied now will not much more than pay up the building program from year to year. It was the intention of the county treasurer to sell these debentures'in Huron County at par bearing inter­ est at 5 per cent and will run tor ten- years, This will be a splendid and safe Investment and the local reeves will gladly furnish any infor­ mation. i By the end of 1930 there will be 500 Old Age pensioners County, The cost of which county will be about $22,000. We congratulate Mr. Lome Tie­ man, who attends Medical .School in London on receiving the J. Campbell Memorial Scholarship physiology. Mr. and’ Mrs. Kraft has moved the house they recently purchased from the Brenner estate. Mr. Milford Merner and Kathleen and Clarence Fisher and M.r. and Mrs. Robt. Hayter spent the week­ end in Windsor and Detroit. The ’ Annual Strawberry Festival of the Evangelical Church will be held on the church lawn on June 25 th. Next Sunday, June 15th will be Rally Day in the Lutheran Church Special services will be held in tne morning, afternoon and evening. The choirs from Stratford, Mitchell and Seberingville will be present. The. death of Mrs. Rinker took place in Sarnia at the home of her daughter Mrs. H. Harris on Monday afternoon at the age of 87 years. Under the beautiful trees in the tourist camp is a fine place for a picnic now that the grounds are all cleaned up. Mr. W. B. Oliver is doing some repairs to the dock. Some oil has been put on streets, of the old burg which will keep the dust down at least. Mr. Russell Gill of the Chatham Branch of the Bank of Toronto is home on his holidays. The new road to take the place of the river road which has been so dangerous, for some time, is nearing completion and appears to be a fine piece of work. Mrs. Wm. Dr. and Mrs. Hamilton and little daughter, of Ailsa Craig, visited with the Misses Wilson on Sunday, Mr, Chas, Atkinson, of Detroit, visited with Mr, and Mrs. John Mc- Falls for a couple of days last week, The Sunday School will hold their annual picnic at Spring'bpnk on Sat­ urday, June 14th. Preparations} are being made for those having no means of transportation and the superintendent Mr. C. Skinner would like all going to meet at the church at 12 o’clock. Miss Mary O'Brien and her lady friend, of London, spent the week­ end at the former’s home here. The many friends of Mrs. Chas. McFalls will be glad to know that she is getting along nicely and is ex­ pected home sometime this week. The June meeting of the W.M.S. was held in the basement of Cen­ tralia Church on Tuesday, June 10 Mrs. F. Lewis and group led the meeting opening with a hymn, Mrs. F, Neil led in prayer. Scripture Lesson found in the 14th chapter of John’ was read by Mrs. T. Neil. Missionary papers were read by Mrs. Penwarden, Mrs. F. Lewis and, Mrs, B, Hicks. Hymn, Mrs. Penwarden sang a. solo. The talk from the study Book was taken by Miss Flossie Davey. Hymn. The presentation of a beaded floor lamp was made to our president Mrs. Irwin, who has done a great deal in building up our society to /a. large increase in mem-, bersliip since her coming here four years ago. Mrs. Irwin made a very touching reply. The address was read by Mrs. Powe and presented by (Mrs. Willis and Mrs. J. Essery. Plans were made regarding the spec- meeting to hear the address of McKellar to be held at Brins- ial Dr. ley in July. The president closed the meeting. Address and Presentation The regular monthly meeting of the Women’s Association was held in the basement of the church on Thursday afternoon, June 5th. Mrs. George Thompson had charge of the devotional part of the program. The ‘meeting was opened by singing hymn 382 after which all repeated the Lord’s prayer. Mrs. Thomas Willis read the scripture lesson. Mrs. Lloyd Hodgson sang a very pleasing solo; Mrs. B,. .Hicks gave a reading-;’ hymn 380 was sung and the presi­ dent Mrs. N. /Mitchell took the chair and conducted a short business ses­ sion. This being, the last meeting for Mrs. Irwip before her depart­ ure, a little remembrance was given her. Mrs. A. Mitchell read the ad­ dress. and Mrs. A; Brooks presented her with a hand embroideried centre piece and- scarf. Mrs. Irwin made a yery suitable reply. The address is as follows: Dear Mrs. Irwin,— Our knowing that such a day as this in the local activities of our organization would surely arrive has only served to emphasize our feel­ ings of sorrow at its approach. A real time is expected as the committee is busy looking aftei’ same, invitation is congregation with them. Children’s church reached its usual height of interest. In the morning service the junior choir had charge of the spec­ ial music. The sermon was in keep­ ing with the commemoration of Pentecost, subject “I was in the spirit on the Lord’s Day.” Four in­ fants were the subjects of holy bap­ tism at the close of the service. The Sunday School presented a brief missionary program at the beginning of its session with (Mr. Emmery Fah- ner as chairman. The offering from the various classes amounted to $70 with the Friendly Bible Class having the highest average. The evening program .greeted a large audience and besides the recitations and ex­ ercises from many of the smaller boys and girls each class in Sunday School was represented and interest was retained till the end of the pro­ gram. The junior choir again offer­ ed their selections for the evening's program. The next big event for the congregation will be the Mother and Daughter banquet on Wednes­ day evening of this. week. THE FULLARTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY A social evening and lecture with lantern slides wag held in the Ful- larton Township Hall on Jjine the 2nd, under the auspices of the above Society. When the lecture started the hall was filled. The Jecfure was given by Rev. Mr. Gibbs, who ;is the Church of England’s minister at Burlington. He is of English des­ cent but moved to Dublin in Ireland when he was fourteen and he .must have kissed the Blarney Stone whilst ■over there, as he is full of wit, and humor. The chair was, taken by Rev. Mr. Warner, the president .and ‘Mr. Hunter, of -Stratford, the district ‘re­ presentative gave a brief talk. The lecture and slides were put on by Rev. Mr. Gibbs. He showed about one hundred .slides about hfilf of them taken, around Burlington and;’ showing what the society was doings around there, and from his own ga/ den and the rest whilst on a trip to England which included the Kew and hosts of private gardens. The slides were made by him from start to finish, taken/ developed, printed to lantern slides and all nicely tinted and would be a credit to anyone. Those who have not heard him and have a chance should not miss as it is well worth going a long way to see and hear. He has a great many jokes on tap and there- are not many dull moments. He hit on the ladles once or twice but he apoligized to them later when they showed him- fhat they could do- at lunch time. A varied program was given during the evening by Mr. and (Mrs. Ed. Hocking and Mr. and Mrs. W. Hock­ ing much to the enjoyment of all. Aftei’ the lecture and a vote of thanks passed to Rev.
