THE LATE SAMUEL BOCTL1'
Samuel Rontly. pioneer of Usborne
Township died at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. ,'Wilbur Wynn, Wood-
ham, late Tuesday night of last week
after being confined to his bed for a
weelc. Previous to that he had been
ailing for about a month.
Mr. Really was born in Devon-
shire, England, 78- years ago and
moved avitll his parents to this coun-
try when but live years of age. The
new comers settled on the 10th Con-
cession of Osborne where the deceas-
ed

ed grew to manhood,
In 1882 lis was married to Eliza-
beth Stinson, a native of Vsbornne and
after a few years -on the homestead,
the young couple moved to a farm
on the 1$tin Concessio=_t, There hIa
wife died about twenty-five years
ago. Ten years later AIr. Routly
moved to Woodham to make his
home with his daughter, .lrrs. Wil-
bur Wynn.
•The deceased took a keen, interest
in municipal affairs and 'sat on tho
Township Council of lasborne for a
number:,o.f years. For two years he
represented his township as Reeve
to the County. Council.

elected president two years ago. At
the time of his death he Was an hon-
orary president of the board.
Surviving are two sons, Guy;, C.N.
R. Agent, at Bright and Clarence,
on the homestead, and one !daughter,
airs. Wilber Wynn, of Woodham, at
whose home. his death occurred, Two
brothers, John of Woodham and
Matthew of the. 10th:.ConCession of
Usborne and one sister, airs. James
Routly, 'Woodham, also survive. An
other sister, Mrs. Adam St.: John, of
Battleford, Sask., predeceased him. •
The funeral was held Thursday af-
ternoon from the home of iIr. and
sirs. Wilbur Wynn to the Woodham
United Church of which deceased
was a faithful' member. Following
a service there interment was made
in l irkton Union Cemetery.

WHITE GIFTS FOIL, THE KING
A. special Christmas service was
held in the James Street United
Sunday School on Sunday afternoon
when "White Gifts for the King"
were presented by the various class-
es. .The orchestra furnished special
music..and commencing with the
primary "the classes presented their
gifts and laid them at the foot of 'a
cross decorated in white. Follow-
ing the presentations Mir. .McTavish
gave a brief story of "The • Other
Wise fan" by Henry Van Dyke. The
gifts included some very • helpful
presents and in addition over $34.00
was received in cash. A comenittee

The Christmas entertainment at
the church last Friday night was
well attendees, despite the bad roads.
It was a big success.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Fairbairn and
Mr. Dick Taylor were snowed in on
their return from Stratford last Wed-
nesday night after doing sonie shop-
ping. They had to walk three miles
through the field to 'the ,train the
following morning.
Miss Mary Tremeer, teacher near
Parkhill, is home for tate Christmas
holidays.
Mr. Angus Robertson motored
from Windsor' to London and exper-
ienced much difficulty, He took the
train from London to Hensall where
he is spending his vacation With his
father Mr. Jack Robertson and his
sister Mrs. Morley Cooper. -

Mr. Fowler of the Bell Telephone
Co, was in town a few days last week
incl. installed a test -panel in our lo-
cal telephone office. Tho sleet
storm caused considerable damage
to the telephone wires in this dis-
trict.
The annual Christmas S. S. En-
tertainment of -the Evangelical
Church was held on Monday even-
ing and was much enjoyed by those
who braved the storm to attend. De-
spite the inclement weather there
was a fairattendance. The program
Consisted of a Cantata entitled "The
Search for a King" was well rencl.r-
ed each taking their parts well,
The league of the Lutherae•
clnuscli gave a program in the base-
ment of the church on Friday even-
ing when Mr. Clayton Pfile was pre-
sented with a purse from the Ladies'
Aicl in recognition of his services as
choir leader.

On Tuesday .evening, December 17,
the pupils of No. 14, Hay held their
Christmas concert. A large crowd.
turned out to hear .the interesting
program prepared. A raised plat-

the evening and costumes were used
for practically every•ntunnber,
Mr..Robert Thornton was an inter-
esting chairman and kept the people
entertained between numbers while
Miss Florence Petty was the capable
pianist.
Messes. Koehler Thomson and
Phillips contributed violin and anouth
organ selections.

logueS; and Irish drill depicting a
quarrel; a mock wedding; a Christ.
Inas pageant called, the Music Box,
.which contained 23 characters from
all the old songs and `T'llymes with
even two tiny tots dressed, as "When
You and 1 Were Young, Maggie."

A pleasant function was held re-
cently in the United church, Centra-
lia, the occasion being the W. M. S.
"At Elaine." 'rine attendance was
large and .the program excellent.
Rev. R. Fulton Irwin presided. The
musical numbers by the Elitnville
iilieed quartette and a pageant en-
titled "Now Eyes for Old" by the
Eiimville Mission Circle were much
enjoyed.
Centralia "Sunbeam Band" pre-

of the progress made by the Society
during the year, attributing it large-
ly to the activities of the effecient
and enterprising captains in charge
of the five circIee into which the
membership was divided. The fol-
