Should the angel choir again eom9 to earth what would It wit-
tress and of what would it slag?
>"7xeept in outward form the world is much the same. Boats
move over the sea a little more rapidly; hands' o$ steel carry traffic
where the ship of the desert moved majestically; pleasure is sought;
Wealth is gained; hearts break or become merry as when those
wondrous visitors looked over Bethlehem's plains,
Yet all is being made new. Tize•new wine that makes glad
the heart of man is bursting the old wineskins. Successful greed no
longer commands respect nor dare it assume arrogant authority.
Kings and rulers no longer have the power of life and death.
tice has been served upon mob rule and upon mob violence. Self
indulgence, falling to pieces of its own worthlessness and weakness,
is passing into the abyss. The idle and the profane command the
good will of no one. Self sacrifice in behalf of the ,good of the race;
achievement that means the enlightened mind; the pure heart and
the name that is above reproach are the watchwords of men who see,
that goodness is the nature of things.
Christmas of 1929 comes upon a chastened civilization. Storms
have swept her coasts. The earthquake has troubled the bed of .old
ocean. Financial catastrophies of • unprecedented distructions have
smitten dumb our captains of industry. Rumors of -war ride on
• every homeless wind. Yet Christmas comes and with it the song
of the angels, a song that we're the more disposed to listen to now
;that some .of Per discords have been found to he noise and nothing
• more.
As we wish our readers a Merry Christmas our desire is .that
all of us may heed the message of the angels and so: order.our lives
that we may be found on their side. As on the first Christmas, so
,' in this December, heaven calls upon men to believe in God's good
wi11 and to love our neighbours as we love ourselves.
