Those gatherings do not as a rule
excite much public interest, but that
the lack of “noise and .stir on their
part in no way suggests anything in
regard to their importance. Should
such gatherings not be held for five
years, there would he a swift re
gression to savagery. At these ga
therings matters, of supreme import
ance are discussed, Foundations of
national well-being are reviewed and
laid. Men are called upon to ask
the meaning of life and are encour

DISCUSS
Premier Ferguson
est about making changes in the law
governing Ontario Public-and High
Schools. For a considerable . .time
this matter lias been under discus
sion, The time of action of some
sort evidently is not far off.
The pity of it is that so far the
people have done little about this
matter but talk. The Prime Minis
ter is on action bent, The people
may as well wake up to that fact.
Things are in the doing. For a long
time there lias been a feeling that
things in the educational world have
not been satisfactory. Yet voters
have felt that lie is a wise man who
is'satisfied with a fairly good thing.
Fdr that reason they have been hesi
tant when it came to encouraging
any change in educational matters.
■ The day for mere waiting and
silence is rapidly passing. That
much is evident. The people of the
province simply must put on their
thinking caps. Overnight changes
of,the most drastic nature may be
made in our school curriculum. Neg
lect has caused serious trouble be
fore now. Women’s Institutes will
do well to give an entire meeting
to ’the discussion of the proposed
legislation. School boards must be
come informed. Townships and
county, councils should give special-
attention to a matter of such import
ance.. Members of parliament should
be heard from.
The Prime Minister has done well
to give timely' notice of the propos
ed, legislation of 1930. In a matter-
so important as 'that of education,
the right of the people to become in
formed to discuss and to rule, is
paramount. These are the days
when well wishers of the- province
will read, mark, study and wisely
consider what is in the mind of our
provincial parliament as it proposes
to lay hands upon one of the
interests of the province.
