Miller and chil­ dren, of Dashwood, Mr. Wellington Beil and Miss Mildred Bell, of De­ troit, and Misg Bessie Bell, of Lon­ don, were visitors at the home of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Bell during the week-end. Messrs. Dia Cornish, Ewart Corn­ ish and Garnet Johns, of Detroit, visited at their respective .homes over the week-end. Little Freddie Wright was taken to the hospital in London last week for treatment for ear trouble, Mr. and Mrs. Wright were down to see him on Sunday. Miss S, Smale, also' went down and is staying in the city while Freddy is in the hospital. Theii’ many friends hope that treat­ ment will effect a cure and that an operation will he unnecessary. Messrs. Walter Johns and Harry Jackson, of 'Western University spent the week-end here. Walter at home and Mr. Jackson with Mrs. (Rev.) White. Mr. and Mrs. Scott St. Marys, spent a few Chas. Heatherley and daughter Thelma and Mr. Stanley Kelly and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scheiding, all of London, spent Sun­ day with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Motz. Mr. and Mrs. A. ‘Gibson and M’r. and Mrs. Mervin Shire and children, all of spent Sunday shire’s parents Anderson. -- Preparations are being made* to celebrate Children’s Day at the'EV-* •anglical church on June 9th. This is one of the annual Missionary fes­ tivities of the church and should he no less than the success of last year. Mothers’ Day was observed in the United church Sunday School last Sunday with a special program in honor of the mothers of our com­ munity. The school room was dec­ orated witli, flowers and the attend­ ance was large on this beautiful Sabbath morning. Mr.( apd Mrs. Hilliard Sparling and son Claire., and'- Mr. Norman Frei­ berger, of Walkerton visited at the I home of Mr. 'and Mrs. John Smitl? on Snuday. They were accompan­ ied home by Miss Lavina Smith, who at present i's- recuperating from a long seige of illness. She., intends remaining there for some time.. There was a very large attend­ ance at the Mothers’ Day Service in-: the United church last Sunday ev­ ening. Nine small children were presented by their parents for Chris­ tian baptism. The pastor preached a wonderful sermon on “Glimpses of Motherhood’’ and. the choir assist­ ed by Miss Baker of Toronto gave two excellent numbers in a very able manner. If you have no church home we invite you to worship With us every Sunday evening at 7:30 o’clock. All welcome. The Ladies’ Aid of the United church held their regular meeting1 in the Sunday School rooms ' on Thursday, -May 9th. Eighteen mem­ bers responded to the roll call with a helpful quotation. The contest now on, for the purpose of raising finances will be closed with the next meeting. Final arrangements were also made for the strawberry festi­ val on Jane .the 6th. After the transaction cf the business a social time was spent, the hostesses being Mrs. Trevethick, Mrs. Zwicker and Mrs. Woodall. Mothers’ Day brought a large at­ tendance at the Evangelical church. There were seven infants brought to the church- .after for the baptismal service. The program in connection with the Sunday School in honor of the mothers was full of interest, the chorus by the junior boys and the chorus with exercise -by the junior girls were both received with ap­ plause. Vocal solo hy Mr. Clayton Sims was well received. The recit­ ations were most appropriate. The Dorcas Class, the C.I.C. 'Class, the Friendly Bihle Class and most of the other classes had full attendance A bouquet of carnations was present­ ed to the oldest mother in the Sun­ day School and fell to our esteemed mother Mrs. Gx K. Brown. Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Swayze, of Stamford, Conn, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Helen Rudd Swayze to Rev. Lome W. Brown, Associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Stam­ ford. Miss Swayze is a graduate of Miss Wheelocks School in Boston and has been * teaching in the Park School in -Boston. Mr. Brown, after graduating from. Victoria College, in Toronto, carried on postgraduate work in New York City, receiving the B. D. degYee from the Union Theological Seminary and the M.A. from Teachers’ College, Columbia University. The wedding date lias been set for June 22nd and after* a short trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshii’6 the couple will Sail on the “S. S. Dresden” on June 27th for a two mouths trip to Europe. Bruce Cooper and 1 played. The Whirlwinds played the Cyclones, the latter winning. Zu­ rich girls played Hensall, Hensall winning 23 to 3. Hensall played Exeter, winning again 14 to 6. Hen-, sail girls of the high school played the public school boys, the boys winning, Zurich hoys then played the Hensall boys and again the Hensall boys won. A great deal of interest was shown in the games. The young peoples’ league of the United church held a social.and lit­ erary entertainment on Monday ev­ ening. Duets were given by Mrs. L. Hedden and Mrs. Geo. Hess; also,by ■Mrs. A. Clark and Miss Buchanan; solos were given by Katherine * Drys- dae and Minnie Sangster; reading by Miss Grant, Mrs. Peppier and “Mrs. Monroe; the high school orchestra gave several selections and Mr. John Hyde gave several fine selections on the violin. At the close of the .en­ tertainment a lunch was served. Mrs. Lee Hedden was in charge of meeting and is responsible for fine program. Mrs. Harry Hunt, of Saskatchewan is here visiting her mother-in-law, Mrs. Hunt, who is seriously ill. Mr. Harry Harmon has rented Mr. A. Bolton’s house on Richmond St. and will move into it shortly. Mrs. Alex' McMurtrie is building some new walks, a new lawn and otherwise improving her property. Mr, Wm. Topham has secured a position in Goderich and intends moving his family there shortly. Hig­ gins were in London Friday attend­ ing the annual meeting of the West­ ern Ontario Conservative Association Mr. and Mrs. Neil-Sparks and Mr. Archie Sparks, of Detroit, spent the week-end here visiting their father. Mr. Alex. Sparks. Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Cleveland and Mrs. Robinson, of Goderich visited ©ver the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. James Patterson. Our Council are having the road to the east >of the village gravelled and graded this week. Mr. Arthur Dick has the contract. Mr. Floyd Smith, of Detroit, visit­ ed over the week-end with his par­ ents, Mr. and IM'rs. Alex Smith. Mr. Smith holds a splendid position in Detroit. ' Mr. Wm. McLaren, Mr. Roy Mc­ Laren, M'iss Ruby McLaren and Mr. and Mrs. Wes. Venner attened the funeral of the late David Christie, •of Cromarty, on Thursday. Mothers’ Day services were held in the United church on Sunday, the pastor Rev. Arthur Sinclair, preach­ ed special sermons to large congre­ gations at both services. Special music was given by a mothers’ choir. A concert was'put on by the Mis- ^iom.Rand, of the United church in the “basement of that church oh Fri­ day evening last. Several choruses j the occasion. Services at 10:30 a. in, and 7 p.m. Mothers’ Day-service was very im­ pressive last Sunday morning. The service was practically in the hands of the mothers of the congregation. A mothers’ choir had charge of.the music. The service was conducted by Mrs. John Essery while Mrs. Lloyd Hodgson read the address to mothers prepared by Mrs. Powe, who owing to illness was unable to be present. The floral decorations were beauti­ ful and abundant. Mr. and, Mrs. Earl Hodgson and ramily, Chatham, spent. Sunday^at' the home of the former’s parents. Mrs: (Rev.),, Irwin is, attending the Conference Convention of'the W. M.S. in Chatham thisbweek, being a Presbytery delegate. We . understand, that our school' teacher,. Miss Davison has tendered her resignation to the trustees. Her going away will be a very great loss to the church and community. As teacher, member of the choir and su­ perintendent of tile Mission Band, she has rendered excellent service and is deservedly highly esteemed. Mr. Irwin preaches on the Grand Bend charge next Sunday. The play “Sonny-Jane” p,ut on by the Hensall young people in the United church, Centralia, on Wed­ nesday, May 15th has been postponed until further notice, probably until the last week in May. The May meeting of the Sunbeam Band, was held on Tuesday after-.- nopn, M'ay 14tli. in the absence of the president, Marlys McFalU, Scot­ ty Baynham was in the chair. The meeting opened with singing the Sunbeam song. Bible stories were told by Mildred Elliott, Reg. Hodg­ son and Dorothy Hicks. The chair­ man led -in prayer- after which we sang “Jesus Loves Me” chorus in the African dialect. In the absence of the secretary, Greta Pollard, the minutes of the last meeting were read and the roll called by. Helen Smith. CARMEL on Started pav- Miss Mavis number of was by was and The community was shocked Tuesday, May 7th when it was learn­ ed that James Ryan had passed away suddenly at Providence Hos­ pital, Detroit, death due to Spinal Meningitis, aged 29 years .and whose funeral took place here to the fam­ ily plot Friday morning last. He is survived by his mother, two sisters and two brothers, of Detroit, form­ erly of this neighborhood. Harold Ryan, of Lucan, is also a brother. Much sympathy is extended to the bereaved family. Mrs. Thomas Lahe, Mrs. Shultz and two children; Mrs. Visgar and Daniel Morrison, -of Detroit, attend­ ed the funeral of the late James Ryan on Friday. A number from here attended the dance at West McGillivray oh Thurs­ day evening.
