D, (Editor of the Sunday School Times) lealttwii I Cereal for Hot Breakfast37-44 ascribed to tlic prophet Isaiah quotations from Isaiah 5;3 and Isa iah 6. As’sO frequently, Christ apd the critics do not agree. After God’s punishment came God’s comfort. “Comfort ye, com fort ye my people, saith your God.” The prophet had been faithful in telling Judah that lfer sins must be judged, and she andJterael must go into captivity. Now^ was divine ly empowered to prophesy what lay beyond the punishment and captiv ity, and declare wondrous comfort and blessing. Jerusalem is now told “that her warfare is accomplish ed, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she hath received of the Lord’s hand double for- all iher sins.” How would the comfort come? How could the forgiveness and^res- toration be accomplished? In only one way: by Him who is the Way, Christ* the Son of God. It is startling to read here, seven centuries fore Christ became a man, a phesy of John the Baptist in very words that lie quoted seven turies later: “The voice of -him crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make'straight in the desert a highway for our God:' Turn to Matthew 3:3 find Mark 1:3 and we read the game wo; As on John the Baptist’s lips. iSins were, going to be lealt with victoriously when come, and So the prophe' dared exaltqd should should rough places plain, be righted as only God i them right. But now sees, not a was seven coming of the Lord that was twenty seven centuries or more ahead, as he declares; “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all shall see it together.” By authority could he dare >ay “EJor the mouth of the Lord spoken,” All flesh did not see the glory of the Lord when Christ came nineteen centuries ago and lived in humility as a man, and died in shame as the sinner’s substitute, and was raised again. But that same Christ is com ing again to this earth in His glori fied body. “Behold, He eometh in the clouds; and every eye shall see Him,” (Rev. 1:7.) Do men need Christ? The pro phet answers: “All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field; '.he grass withereth, the flower fadeth.”- Yes, men need Christ. Men are weak ness and helplessness, and, left to themselves, their life would be brief and ephemeral. “But the word of our God shall stand •forever.” Word of God. cause of man’s awful need the comforting salvation as men’s Saviour. The destructive critics Bible have, told us that the Book of Isaiah was necessarily written by two or more persons; it could not possibly have been written by one man. The reason given is that the •earlier part of the book, Such as the first 39 chapters, declare God's judgments upon and punishment for :sin; while the latter part of the book, such as from Chapter 40 on, declares God’s forgiveness of sin and restoration of the sinner. And no one man, say the critics, would talk about judgment and punish ment for sin, and forgiveness of sin. It seems incredibly strange rea soning does it not? As though a human father could not punish his own child for sinning, and then his arms around that child and take him close to his heart and show him a father’s love. Many a writer of the Scriptures does the same thing, setting forth God’s righteous judg ments and His forgiving mercy. If one and the same God can take both attitudes, one and the same man can tell about this. The first 39 chapters of the Book of Isaiah look toward the captivities. The remainder of the book, from Chapter 40 on, looks beyond the cap tivities. “The change in style, about which so much has been said, is no more remarkable than the change in theme. A prophet who was also a patriot would not write of the sins and coming captivity of his people in the same exultant -and joyous style which he would use to describe their redemption, blessing power.” * Still further, let us remember the Lord Jesus Christ, in John wsv •SL. r--------------- of the PONTIAC BIG> Y OU are cordially invited to visit our show room during the Special Spring Show, and to learn more about the big six quality which Pontiac now introduces (for the first time) into the low-priced field. When Christ King of the Jews returns he wiljfesi tablish His Kingdom on earth' and make David’s throng at JerusaJeni the centre of righteous rule and ’un told blessing for Judah and Israel and all the earth. He will rule “with strong hand, and His arm rule for Him.” Then the prophet turns us to the tenderness of Christ the Saviour as Shepherd.. “He shall feed His flocks like a shepherd; He shall gather the lambs with His* arm, and carry them in His bosom.” ‘ Some people say Hie Old Testa ment is interesting only as an ob solete book, to be put bn the anti quarian’s shelf, and of no practical interest and value today. Yet in this lesson are some of the most precious passages of the New Testa ment, uttered many centuries before by an Old Testament prophet/ they are repeated in James 1:10, I. Peter 1:24, 25, and by the Good Shepherd Himself in John 10. We need the Old Testament to understand the New. when dtppea.
