PIONEER SETTLER DESCRIBES
HIS JOURNEY NEAR PERTH,
upper Canada, is-*’
Our own waggoner, in spite of all
his care and skill, was baffled, his
horse having laired in a mired pit
of the road where he stuck fast. And
even after he was loosened from the
yoke the poor animal strove so much
to no purpose that lie fell down in a
state of complete exhaustion three
times in the mire.
The mire was so tenacious, be
ing a tough clay, that we were com*
pelled to diseugage his feet from the
clay by handspikes. Still he strug
gled to get out our wagon, which was
mired, hut in vain. A team of oxen
were now fastened to It, and it was
at length pulled out . . Next morn
ing the road appeared so bad that
it put us to a complete stand. The
pnly alternative was to pull up the
farmers fences, and thus got through
and closed them' up again. It was
wholly a region of woods except some
places occupied by farmhouses and

THAT your town deserves the

THAT any business man who does

himself of service to his community,
should make room for a live ©he.
THAT if he wants more business
lie should show tlie prospective buy

he has to sell by advertising, then
back it up with the right kind of

THAT some towns should get a
