The estimates provide tor $21,000 for a public building. While the estimates have, not as yet received they are elusion, building pier. The government at present own the site which is known as Federal park. It was purchased fifteen years ago by the Conservative party but just at that time owing to the war, building operations on public buildings were suspended by the government and the building was never erected. Several years ago the Exeter Horticultural society un dertook to beautify the spot and it’ was levelled up, seeded to grass and INCREASED PRODUCTION Mr. C. Pym, of Usborne, is suc cessfully endeavoring to solve the problem of increased production. Two months ago a cow belonging to Mr. Pym gave birth to a pair of twin calves and on Saturday last another cow presented him with a pair of twins. Two pair of twin calves in two months , is not doing badly. HOWELL—HAIST A quiet wedding was solemnized at the Evangelical parsonage, De troit, by Rev. Clyde Gibson, Thurs-' day, February the 14th, when Miss Madeline G. Haist, of Detroit, dau ghter of the late Ezra Haist and Mrs. Haist, formerly of Crediton, and Mr. George E. Howell, were united in marriage. The young couple will reside at 207 Manistique Ave., Detroit, Mich. OPERATION FOR APPENDICITIS Mr. R. E. Davis, of the Bank of Montreal, Windsor, was taken ill with 'an acute attack, of appendicitis and underwent an operation on Sat- jUday last-in AVindsq^Jiospitalv Mrs.- .pavis left' the same "evening for the home of her son Joseph, of Chat ham, and on Sunday both of them left for Windsor. Latest reports state th'at Mr. Davis is getting along as well as can be expected. Mrs. Art. Robinson, of the. Lon don Road south, was taken to Vic toria Hospital in London on Thurs day to undergo an operation for an acute attack of appendicitis. The case is particularly unfortunate as Mrs. Robinson has a two-montlis-old babe which is being cared for by her sister-in-law, Mrs. Jas. Blair. McMillan, Since Mr. McMillan has kept in close touch with the situation. He visited Exe ter and interviewed a number of the citizens and it is largely through" Ills efforts that a postoffice is practic ally assurred. Representatives from both the Postal Department and the Department of Public Works also visited the town and met a deputa tion of the citizens and were favor ably impressed. As a result of these combined activities Exeter has been placed in the estimates for $21,000. VALENTINE CARNIVAL WAS HUGE SUCCESS The valentine carnival in I Dome Rink on Wednesday evening , of last week was bigger and better , than ever, in fact it was one of the best ever staged in Exeter, The crowd was large and costumes of nearly every conceivable variety seemed to be represented. Young sters were there in 'all softs of Val7 entine icreations; clowns paraded for the amusement of the spectators and stately courteriers and hand somely dressed ladies were among the large number in costume. 12 of these costumes were brought up . from London for the occasion. The master of ceremonies was Mr. Frank- Taylor and the various contestants were presented to the spectators, J the one receiving the most applause I receiving the prize. Preceding the I judging a clown hockey match, that was a scream from start to fifiiSh, was pla-yed with brooms and a foot ball, the score being a tie neither side being able to score. A ladies’ race of five laps was won by Miss McKenzie and the men’s race was won by ’Fete' ^lilard. ‘ The ’ Dash-' wood Band provided the music. Only two schools were represented in the junior contest in Main Street church; Sarnia and Exeter and Sar nia won both for the boys and the girls. For Exeter Miss Ruby Stone spoke on “Our Debt to 'Ontario Pioneers” and Melvin Snider took for his topic, “Ontario and its Resources.” From Sarnia, Miss Dorothy Haney, sister of W. S. Haney, M.L.A., spoke on “Ontario and its Resources” and Da vid Kerr’s subject was “Russia, Past and Present.” The judges were Rev. Jas. An thony, of Thames Road; Rev. A. Sin clair and Rev. T. W. Jones, of Hen sail. All contestants did exception ally well and wore given merited ap plause. The decision of the judges was for the two students from Sar nia. Rev, C. J. Moorhouse occupied the chair. Tho senior contest was held in Strathroy, contestants being present from Parkhill, Strathroy, Sarnia and Exeter. The winner for the boys Was Mr. Herman.
