The ice this year is a splendid sample;, clear and about 15 inches thick. Mr. Thos. Welsh is having a lot of logs delivered at his saw mill here the farmers taking advantage of the good sleighing to get their logs in. Mr. Walter Bezzo, while working in the' barns of Mr. Archie Row cliff^ got Ijis hand cqught in a litter carrier and .got. the fingers of one .hand badly but. Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Drummond and granddaughter, Miss Margaret Drummond, dre leaving .shortly for Toronto where,,they will make their future home. . The young people of Carmel Pres byterian church held-a skating party on the rink on Monday evening. Af ter a couple of hours skating the young folks went oVer to the church where a program was run off, fol lowed by a lunch. The evening was greatly enjoyed by all. Reeve Higgins has received from John Rogers & Son, C. E., of Mit- cheH, the award, with plans and specifications of th© drain to be dug at th© south west part of the village and coming up as far as the planing mill on.South Richmond street. The council will meet on Friday evening to consider th© plans. Mrs. G. W. Reid, of Port Rowan. Is spending, a week or so with her parents, Mi\- and Mrs. E. Sheffer, arriving on Thursday .evening, com ing to be present at her mother’s birthday, which ' she celebrated, a ' large number of relatives and friends of Mrs. Sheffer rialling^in and wish ing her many hajipy returns. The services in the United church on Sunday last, were Well attended.' The regular meeting of the Wo men’s Guild of St.. Paul’s Anglican Church was held oh Tuesday even ing with a good attendance. Follow ing the opening hymn. Rev, Mr, W. Jones led in prayer. Tile Guild are making preparations fox* a bazaar to be held next fall. They held a miscellaneous showei’ at this meow ing which was very sxiocessful. Mrs.'- Pepplex* and Miss E. Johnston gave two fine readings which wore very much enjoyed. The meeting was closed with prayer -by Rev. Jones, after which lunch Whs served. Hand Badly Crushed Mr. Wm, Topham, while working in the flax. mill the other day, no ticed an elevator not working. He put in his hand, to start it, when it started suddenly, crushing his hand badly. Dr. .-Dougall took him to Seaforth Hospital and .had an X-ray examination of his hand and arm, but found no bones- broken. Mr... Topham will be laid up for some time. The accident was very unfor tunate for him. as he had just se cured employment. Buy Business in Exeter We ' understand that Mr. Albert Traquair and Mr. Ed. Lind'enfield have purchased the Heaman Hard ware store in Exeter and. will take possession shortly. They are both competent men in their’ line. Mr. Traquair has been in the employ of Bonthron & Drysdale for a number of years in the store and Mr. Lin- den'field being at the head of the tin smithing and- plumbing department for -the same firm. They are both well-known in this district and will no doubt, do a big business in Exe ter. , Presentation and Address The lA. Y. P. It was also decided to hold a St.- Patrick’s Social and entertain ment on March 17th and to secure a Missionary if possible to conduct the service oh April 28th. S. of the United church held their monthly meeting zon Thursday with a large number of members present. The president, Mrs. McDonell, presided. It was de cided to hold the annual day of prayer on Friday afternoon, Febiju-' ary 15 in the United Ch'urch. • Ar rangements have been.made for this day of prayer. •, Mrs. Drysdale will receive the members of the W.M.S.* from the local churches, Mrs. Smale and 'Mrs. McDonald were appointed the visiting committee- for this month. A very interesting reading, “Partners with God,” - was given by< Mrs. McQueen and lhuch enjoyed. This was followed with ’prayer 'by Mrs. Merner and the study by Miss A. Cou’sitt. Cliisclhurst Church Holds Annual Meeting Th© annual business meeting of Chiselhurst United church was held on Tuesday evening. After tlie de* votional exercises . by the minister, Rev. A. Sinclair, the reports of the organization were received,, showing fine progress during the year. The amounts raised by the different or ganizations were as follows: Ladies’ Aid $120.00; Sunday School $99.00; W. M. ,S. $67.00; M. & M. Fund $275.00; for all purposes $1,282.00. Mrs. Elder read a finely selected portion of the “Study Book” and '.Mrs. McKellar leading in prayer. The roll call text for the, day being “Thoughtfulness,” was very suitably respbnded to by all the members.. Mrs. S. A# Miller having the choice of subjects for the day gave a very helpful' paper on “Oui* Forward Look into -Service.” A few minutes were taken up for the business part of the meeting af ter which Mrs. Jas. Bernice Brown, little daughter of Mr. and (Mrs, Otto Brown, who was quite ill last week Is now recovered. Mr. Garfield Neil, who has been in Detroit for some time, has return ed to his home here. Miss Mary O’Brien spent the week-end in London. . Mr. Murray Neil and Mr. Richard Parker, who have been attending training camp in London, have re turned to their homes. Mrs, B. E. Hicks has been on the sick list but is now recovering. Mrs. W. J. Webber, .who has been in Victoria hospital for a time, is ex pected to return to her home this Wednesday. (From another Source) A novel event will take place the Sunday School room of church here next Friday evening in the shape of a spelling match in which foul' local schools are to take part. Centralia circuit has the great pleasure 'of finding itself among the churches that raised their full allot ment this year for the Missionary and Maintenance Fund. The amount raised is the highest in the history of the circuit and shows, that they are getting a wider vision of the Kingdom of God and their Christian duty to it. The Interdenominational Women’s Day of Prayer will be. observed in this church on Friday afternoon, February the 15 th. Following the prayei- seiwice the regular monthly meeting of the W.M.S. will be held. Rev. Mr. Irwin is at present preaching a course of Sunday morn ing sermon’s on the Creed. Gaiser returned home from St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, after a successful operation, The annual congregational meet ing of the Shipka United Church was held Thursday evening. February the 7th with a large attendance. Reports were presented from all the differ ent organizations showed 1928 to be a splendid year. The Sunday Scliool Trustee Board and Ladies’ Aid all closed their books with a balance on hand." The nesday night between Kirkton and Fullarton resulted in a score of 2-2 and the second on Saturday after noon between Kirkton and Carling ford scored 5-2 in favor of Kirk* ton. Our league went to Woodham on Monday evening and took charge of the program after which they were entertained by the Woodham Lea gue. . Mr. Alf. GRAND BEND Mrs. John Holt, who has been the sick list, is some what improved Mr. and Mi'S. Bud Broderick have returned to St. Catherines. Mrs. Broderick was liome waiting on her other, Mrs. Wm. Elsie, who is much improved. ' Quite a number attended the fu neral of Mr. John Pollock, of Cor bett, on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Statton and Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Oliver attended, the funeral of Mr. Batty, of Sarnia, on Friday. ’ Miss Doris Rockey, who has been visiting at Mr. Dave Sturgeon’s re turned to her .home in Stratford on Monday. Lovie, who lias befen quite ill, is much improved. Mr. Gordon Turnbull spent Satur day with his father, Mr. Thomas Turnbull, Who Is on the sick list, but a little on the mend. Death of Mr. Levi Hamacher This community was,. cast into deep gloom last Thursday evening when it was learned that •Mr/ Levi Hamacher had • phased away very suddenly at the home daughter in Detroit, death being d'tie to heart failure. The funeral’was held from his late residence here in Dashwood on Monday •afternoon?®’ -The auditor ium of the * church was practically filled with niourners and friends. Rev. W. Ness iri a very able address paid a fitting tribute to the charac ter of the deceased and spoke of the high esteem in,, which, he • was held in the community.
