Santa at Legion Christmas Party
Santa Claus paid his annual visit to the Legion Hail on Sunday for the
Legion Branch children's party. He brought gifts to nearly 300 children of

decorated their homes for the
coming Christmas. season and
took part in the Horticultural
Society's contest. These were
judged on Monday evening with
the prizes' awarded the follow-
ing: first, Mr. and Mrs. Robert
J. Phillips; second, Mr. and
Mrs. William T. Robison; and
third, Mr, and Mrs. Roy Finni-
gan. The judges were Mr. and
Mrs, Donald Aberhart and Mr.
and Mrs. Ernie Pridham, all
of Goderich.
CGIT Vesper
The annual Christmas vesper
service of the Canadian Girls
in Training was held December
10 in Knox Presbyterian Church
with the president, Judy Arthur
the leader of the service. Marge
area Sanderson read the Christ-
mas story frorn St. Matthew 2.
The theme of the service was
"The God of Light". The im-
pressive candle-lighting service
was held: with Darlene Stewart,
Linda Baechler and lelarjorle,'
Youngblut lighting the' candles
and various parts taken by Gail
Miller and Diane Kirkconnell.
The offering was received 'by
Patsy Millian and Patsy Reed
and 'the 'ushers were Mary San-
derson and Marian Youngblut
who 'distributed the printed pro-
grams before the service. A
duet was sung by Misses Bar-
bara Mackay and Margaret
Haines,
Dr. D. J. Lane spoke on the
theme of the service and told
of the' two great lights, the
sun and the moon which God

stars to the Corr Girls who
should shine through with their
faith, love and service and he-
lieve in Jesus who is the Light
of the world.
Sunday School Concert
The Sunday school auditor-
ium was filled to capacity for
the annual church school con-
cert. Rev. Charles Lewis was
the chairman for the program
which included Christmas car-
ols; Mrs. Leonard' Archam-
bault's class sang a welcome
song; Miss Margo Grange's
class gave a recitation and
song; Mrs. Jack Armstrong's
class had a recitation by Marie
Plunkett and songs 'by all mem-
bers,.
Tom Cunningham's class of-
fered a recitation by Daryk
Bail and a piano solo by Stev-
en Haggitt. Miss Betty Dur-
nin?s class sang the chorus,
"Silver Bells". Mrs. Bert
Craig's class also sang a chorus
and the chairman: gave a short
address' at this time,
William L. Craig's class of
boys had Douglas Durnin give
a recitation and Murray Wight-
man played a piano solo. Jack
Wright's class' offered a trio
by Glen Webster, Allan Speigel-
berg and. Allan Craig, accomp-
anied' by Robert Wilkin.
Junior Bible class was repre-
sented by Misses Betty Young-
blut and Marsha Koopmans
who sang a duet. The senior
Bible class, Mr. and Mrs.
George Militate Mrs. Gordon
McClinchey and Mr. Oliver An-
derson sang a quartette selec-
tion.
Following the singing of sev-
eral carols, Mr. and Mrs. San-
ta Claus were piped in by Pipe
Major Miller, Goderich'. They
distributed' the gifts to the
children and nagged out over
170 bags: of candy.
Thomas Kearney
(Auburn Correspondent)
Thomas Kearney passed
away in Victoria Hospital, Lon-
don, late Saturday evening in
his 69th year. Born in West
Wawanosh in the St. Augus-
tine district, he had spent his
entire life time in that town-
ship, where he was a farmer.
Surviving are two sisters,
Miss Elva, who lived with him
and Sister Mary Jerome, Moth-
er Superior of St. Joseph Con-
vent, Simcoe.
Requiem high mass was sung
by Father L. C, Thomas at the
St. Augustine church on Tues-
day morning, December 19.
Burial took place in St. Augus-
tine R.C. cemetery. Pallbearers
were Kenneth. Leddy, Gus Red-
mond, Hilliard Jefferson, Ted.
Robinson, Gordon Foram. and
Clarence Gibbons.

The December meeting of the
Guild of St. Mark's Church was
held at the- home of Mrs, Sam
Deer with agood attendance,.
Mrs. Andrew Kirkconnell pre,
sided for the program and Mrs,
Gordon R. Taylor accompanied
on the piano. Christmas carols
were sung throughout the
meeting and the scripture les-
son, the :Christmas story, St*
Luke 2, was read by Mrs:, Ed,
Davies,
Prayers were given by Mrs.
Thomas Heggitt. A reading,
"Those 'Christmas Songs" were
given by Mrs. Herbert Govier.
The study book phapter on the
Work of Miss Eleanor Rice, the
supervisor of children's work
in the WA was read by Mrs.
George Sehneider. Mrs. :Gord-
on R, Taylor sang the solo,
"The Birthday of a King," ac-
cOnaPanied by Mrs, Robert 3,
Phillips,
Rev, R. Meally gave an in-
spiring Christmas message on
the text, found' in Isaiah 9:6.
After singing the carol, "While
Shepherds Watched' Their
Flocks," Mrs . Kirkconnell
thanked all who had taken part
in the program.
The president, Mrs. Thomas
Haggitt took 'the chair for the
business period and the min-
utes were read by Mrs. Ed Dav-
ies and the financial statement
by Mrs. Gordon R. Taylor, Roll
call was answered ,by 15 mem-
bers telling about their hap-
piest 'Christmas,
Rev. R, Meally presided for
the election of officers for the
coming year. They are past
president, Mm, Thomas Hag-
gift; president, Mrs. George
Schneider; vice president, Mrs.
Lloyd' Humphries; secretary,
Mrs. John Daer; treasurer, Mrs.
Gordon R. Taylor; press reports
er, Mrs. Ed'. Davies; pianist,
Mrs. Gordon R. Taylor; assist-
ant, Mrs. Andrew Kirkconnell;
program committee, Mrs. Rob-
ert Meally, Mrs. Fordyce Clark,
Mrs, Lloyd Humphries.
The meeting was closed with
an auction and lunch served
by Mrs. Sam Daer assisted by
Mrs. Andrew Kirkconnell, and
Mrs. John Daer.
Knox United 'CMS
Final Meeting
Held at Auburn

Soft music was played by
Mrs. William 5. Craig as the
members assembled in the Sun-
day school auditorium for the
Christmas meeting of the Wo-
man's Missionary Society of
Knox United Church. Mrs. Fred
Toll was in: charge of the
Christmas program and opened
with the story, "It is Christ-
mas Night".
The hymn, "Brightest and
Best are the Sons of the Morn-
ing," was sung and meditation
was taken by Mrs. Fred Toll,
Mrs. Elliott Lapp and Mrs.
John Durnin, They represented
the wise men around the nativ-
ity scene. The Christmas story
was read as• recorded in St.
Matthew 2. A duet was' sung
by Mrs. George Minim and
Mrs. Gordon McClinchey,,
"Peace and :Goodwill",
Those taking the parts were
the following: vision, Mrs. Guy
Cunningham; faith, Mrs, Bent
Craig; joy, Mrs, Oliver Ander-
son; worship, Mrs. Harold Web-
ster; gifts, Mrs. Norman Mc-
Dowell and dreams, Mrs. Gor-
don McClinchey. This part was
closed by a wonderful story of
peace and joy told by Miss
Margaret P,, Jackson.
A solo, "In the Cross of
Christ, I Glory," was sung by
Mrs. Charles Lewis. After sing-
ing the carol, "Hark the Glad
Sound," an 'interesting and tim-
ely skit on Christian citizen-
ship, entitled "Citizenship that
Counts," prepared by Mrs. Wil-
liam T. Robison was presented
by Mrs. Norman McDowell,
Mrs. Donald Fowler and Mrs.
W. T. Robison.
Mrs. William J. Craig played
softly, "Take Time to be Holy,"
while the offering was received
by Mrs, Harold Webster and
Mrs. Guy Cunningham. Mrs.
Toll thanked' all who h.aid: as-
sisted' her with the program
and closed with prayer.
The 'president, Mrs. John
Durnin presided for the buei-
riess session. The minutes were
read by the secretary, Mrs. Roy
Easom, and she also called the
roll which was answered by a
verse of scripture containing
the word, "manger".
The treasurer, Mrs. Harold
Webster, gave the financial
statement stating that alloca-
tion had been reached with
some left over to assist hi other
ways. A 'thank-you note had
been received from Ernest Dur-
nin. Mrs. jamet Jackson and
Mrs. Norman 1VIeDowell were
chosen to look after the pack-
ing of the Christmas boxes for
the sick and shut-ins. Any do-
nations 'to these boxes will be
gratefully accepted,
Several items of business
were discussed and settled. Mrs,
Durnisi thanked her executive
and all the members who had
so willingly helped in so many
ways to make the past year in-
teresting and successful. After
singing "0 Little Town of
Bethlehem" the last meeting
of the Kriox tinited Church
WMS. was closed with the bene-
diction,
