JOINED A BUS -LOAD OF 33
hog producers from the vari-
bus townships within Huron
bast Thursday ... and journey-
ed with them to the big city
of Toronto to view the place
where the experts the farmers
have hired are doing the job
of selling hogs . . .
* * *
IN REN'1 ]) QUARTERS, A
busy staff is continually at
work figuring out amounts pay-
able to each farmer - - . typing
cheques' . .. running machines
which sign and date them .. .
other machines which seal and
stamp the envelopes . . . then
sorting the returned cheques
...making sure that each far-
mer in Ontario does cash. his
cheques . . remitting proper
payments to truckers 11 .. and
receiving the proper payments
from the packers who buy the
hogs .. .
* * *
ALREADY THE ADVANTAG-
es of having a peaking plant
next to the place where the
hogs are assembled is evident
For at the south' edge
o▪ f Huron County where Steph-
en Township meets up with Mc-
Gillivray in the County of
Middlesex ... n packing plant
is being constructed next td :the
assembly yard at Corbett . .
That should produce local em-
ployment for somebody . . .

WE MET BEN STEERS, presi-
dent of the board of directors
of the Ontario Hog Pr'oducer's
Association and Jake Kohler,
the general manager . . We
dined as guests of the OHPA
hi the restaurant which is
directly below and in front of
the producers building ... Pork
chirps, of Course . . . And we
toured the offices where every-
one was co-operative in telling
us how things were dome . . .
We saw the microfilming room
where 0.11 manifests and can-
celled cherlttes axe pUt an filen,
and stored in fireproof cabinets
. , 'Phis takes up touch less
roetn than Storing the actual
paper records .*.
WHEN WE'D HAD ENOUGH
a the eledtrentie marvels by
which the hog producers Drell
their product through .a tele-
type machine (the only one of
its kiind ever built)1111. . we'
were oto aur ,agait;
Cliff Ashton, germs bus driver
for J and' T Murphy Ltd., pilot-
ed us across Toronto streets
to the packing plant of Press -
woods . . . where the produc-
ers visited the killing rooms,
grading rooms, etc. of this
large pork packing plant . .
Meanwhile we rested in the
bus, .getting up enough energy
far the next tour which was
at the Ontario Stockyards . .
* * *
THIS WAS OUR FIRST VISIT
to the big stockyards •. . .and
we were impressed, though not
altogether favourably ... After
seeing the modern way in
which the hog men handle their
product, the one -at -a -tune auc-
tion of one cattle beast after
another seemed ponderous,
slow and quite inefficient . . .
Though this may be a female
attitude . . . it doesn't seem
fair that an animal which is
consigned to death shortly,
should be prodded into the ring,
and round about it, by men
shouting, and with sticks . .
sometimes to be sold, and some-
times to be sent out into the
broiling heat again, maybe to
be sold the next day . . or
maybe not . . Meanwhile the
hogs consigned to market are
relaxed and happy in an assem-
bly yard where water and feed
are handy . . and when they
are sold by the teletype
machine they are loaded and
trucked right to the plant
where they are consigned . . .

SEEMS A LOT MORE sensible
to us.. .
