Monday's Globe and Mail car-
ried a complete list of ratings
of Secondary School Boards,
as accumulated from question-
aires answered by secondary
school teachers for compilation
by the Ontario Secondary Sch-
ool Teachers, Federation.
Contents of the reports mail-
ed back to the teachers by the
Federation were labeled con-
fidential, and not intended for
reading by the boards, nor
presumably, the general public.
Generally speaking, the tea-
chers have a high opinion of
the boards who hire them. Cl-
inton teachers did not send in
their questionalires in large en-
ough numbers to be included
in the report. To be included,
75 percent of the teachers hired
by any one board, must send
back the questionaire.
I n surrounding secondary
schools, the report showed the
following:
Only Wingham was rated ex-
cellent in all three categories.
On the .first category, the
board's attitude toward educa-
tional improvement, Wingham
and St. Marys, excellent; Ex-
eter, Seaforth, good; Listowel,
fair; Gaderioh, Lucknow, Kin-
cardine, Mitchell, unsatisfact-
ory.
In the second category, 'the
relations between board and
staff, Exeter, Seaforth and
Wingham, excellent; Listowel,
St. Marys, good; Lucknow, ad-
equate; Goderich, Mitchell, Kin-
cardine, unsatisfactory.
In the third category, work-
ing conditions in the school.,
Goderich, Exeter, Mitchell, St.
Marys and Wingham, excellent;
Kincardine, good; Listowel,
fair; Lucknow, Seaforth, unr
satisfactory. '
Purpose of the survey was
explained by Donald Thomas,
president • of the OSSTF, "Al-
though the report is intended
to be of use mainly as a help
to teachers who are, changing
positions, it also leads 'Osome
general conclusions as to the
opinion of teachers on their
school boards, relative to the
questions asked. The most in-
teresting generalization is that
teacher attitude towards school
boards is not one of destructive
criticism, but rather, teachers
generally have a high opinion
of their employing board."
