First Draw Won
By W. ortre an
Se forth Rink
A rink skipped by the Rev,
D. 3. Lane, .Huron Street, Clin-
ton, reached the semi-finals in
the Seaforth Men's Curling
Club's first draw. Playoffs were
last Thursday, December 22.
A rink skipped by W. Moore,
Seaforth won the draw, which
was the first of three planned
for this winter,
64 curlers participated. Clin-
ton men who skipped rinks were
Royce Macaulay, Douglas Miles,
the Rev. D. 3. Lane and Hugh
Hawkins,
the Government pick up the
bill.
The alternative seems to be
for the Hog Producers to have
the Government take over the
sales agency and assets that
the Producers have set up and
financed.
This might be compared to
my driver's permit, I fulfilled
the •requirements and received
a permit to drive my • car, If
I fail to obey the regulations
the strong arm of the. law
can take my permit and im-
pound my car.
This much I can stand. But
I cannot stand for the law to
take my car to go driving with
my wife.
Yet this is the situation, fac-
ing the present Hog Marketing
Agency if Hog Producers fail
to bend the knee.

Happy - New Year! (I hope)
and since farmers are a part-
icularly optimistic group of
individuals, I expect most of
them are taking up their belts
a notch or two to meet what
lies ahead,
Even the hog producers are
undaunted and • are even now
laying plans for a "FAME"
share selling campaign early in
the new year. There seems
to be a strong feeling of en-
thusiasm and determination on
the part of producers in this
direction and eventually they
will have their own processing
plants,
In the present marketing sit-
uation for the hog producers
the future does not look bright.
The recent order by .the Farm
Products Marketing Board st-
ates that the hog producers
must present a new method of
marketing hogs by January 16.
This seems to be unreason-
able.
A good many years and sev-,
eral experiments were required:
in the development of the pres-
ent method so it is hardly like-
ly that a better plan' can be
developed in a couple of weeks.
(After all the members of the
Hog Producers Marketing Boa-
rd would like to have a few
days off •to relax for Christ-
mas and New Years.)
The newmethods suggested
by Mr. McCague have already
been suggested by the hog pro-
ducers over the past couple of

years but previously apparent-
ly did not meet. with the ap-
proval of the Government-ap-
pointed body. Why the change
of heart?
It seems to be intended in
all three of 'the suggestions:
open 'auction, Dutch clock and
ticker-tape bidding-that all
buyers must somehow be as-
sembled in one place in Tor-
onto.
I think all of you will realize
that it will be most. inconven-
ient for a great many of the
smaller packers to arrange to
have a representative attend
this place of sale at all times.
To avoid this difficulty the,
Farm Products. M ark et in g
Board can license buyers who
could purchase hogs for several
plants. In other words several
brokers will. be necessary who
will have to be paid, for out
c° the proceeds of the hog.
This cost along with the
cost of supplying a place and
facilities might easily approach
the controversial $75,000 to
finance the Ontario Hog Pro-
ducers Association.
• Since- this additional expense
ls at the order of the govern-
ment-appointed body and sup
prised to be largely to 'protect
the interests of the consumer
it would seem logical Ito have
