When the foundation is fin- ished a deep pit is left around the outside of the foundation wall. Pilling this with earth is known as backfilling. It does not have to be done immediately after completion of the founda- tion; in fact if the house has a block foundation it is not wise to start backfilling until some lateral support has been provid- ed for the foundation walls, since the weight of the backfill may cause the foundation to cave in. Rubbish should be removed from the pit before backfilling begins as it may cause cavities, with consequent surface depres- sions when the backfill packs down. This may not •happen un- til much later when the land- scaping has been completed, and the home owner may be put to' considerable expense to repair the damage. Using frozen earth as backfill may also lead to surface col- lapse. Frozen soil buried four feet 'underground takes a con- siderable time to thaw out. Un- der these conditions the surface around the foundation has been known to drop a foot or more, months after occupancy of the new home. Backfill should be free of boulders as these may damage REMOVE ALL LEFT-OVER RUBBISH BEFORE BACKFIRING WITH EARTH the damp-proofing which pro- tects the foundation.
