Congratulations To The Princess!
Report on .rederatiolfs Successes
(By a, CARL BRIONGWAY)
Perhaps most of you already
lmow that Huron County's
representative in, the Ontario
Dairy Princess Contest, Miss
Doreen Howatt, Belgrave, won
the preliminary contest on Au-
gust 30. We hope that you will
be able to read elsewhere in
this paper that she has also
won in the semi-finals on Sep-
tember 5 or 6. We also hope
that Doreen's success will en-
courage more of our talented
Huron County young ladies to
enter in next year's county
contest,
On August 30 members of
the Ontario Federation of Agri-
culture met in the Royal York
in. Toronto. I would like to re-
port on some of the topics un-
der discussion:
Charles Munroe reported for
the membership committee and
pointed out the need for the
Federation to show that the
organization is: giving the in.
dividual farmer member some-
thing for his membership fee.
The Federation has clOrte quite
well in the giving but all too
often has failed in the show-
ing.

A,
this item I think YOU will real,-
ize that your organization is.
malfng real headway van,
ng benefits for you.
In reporting for the proper-
ties flep,artment, Mr, J. Fergus-
on showed where farmers had
made real gains in obtaining .
adequate compensation for
lands taken by Hydro, The
same has happened in the case
of highways .and pipelines. Per-
haps greater than this is the
hope that this department has
of obtaining a "Trail of Neces-
sity" on public use of land.
By law, any public corporation
or goveniment department by
stating a case of convenience
and necessity can get authority
to expropriate your land.
Too often "convenience and
necessity" seems to apply only
to the corporation rather than
to the public. In one case in
a neighboring county, the high,
way changed a curve, cutting
off about five acres of land,
cutting off the farm buildings
from the rest of the farm. A
necessity, if you wish to drive
at 75 or 80 miles en hour; a
convenience, but at much too
high a price. The Federation
hopes that it will be compul,
sory that a discussion of this
"convenience and necessity" be
held with those :concerned be-
fore the development takes
place.
The Federation has been suc-
cessful in its request that a
railway. committee be set up
to meet with the Federation
representatives before freight
rates are changed.
The properties department is
beginning a detailed study of
taxation methods. It is hoped
that this will eventually result
in more equitable taxation for
rural people.
Your Federation is contin,
ually assisting various groups
in making presentations to gov-
ernment on matters of tariff.
Most recently they have been
assisting the soyabean and corn
growers in order to obtain
equal tariffs with the U.S.
