Properly Built Chimney Will Last.
for Lifetim0 of Your New House
In. a .well-designed. house the
chimney :should hartnOnize with'
the rest of the ,structure,- Wher-'
ever possible it should actually
entande the general appearance,
of the building but its main pur-
pose is functional, rather than .
deeorative.
There are three things. basic to
a good chimney, First, it must be.
able to. draw off all gases .and
smoke resulting from 'the .conbus-
tion of fuels. Its efficiency in
this,riespect will depend On the
size of the flue, the height of the
chinineY, ,and the air pressure
Within. the stack, though this fac-
tor is sometimes idifficult. to con-
trol. Second,- it must be fire-
proof, A poorly constructed chim-
ney is a constant fire hazard, es-
pecially if solid fuels are used.
Third, the chimney must be built-
to last, Acids produced by coin-
bustiou have corrosive effect,
and .cause certain types of mason-
ry to' disintegrate more raPit11y
than others. These.acids can also
be harmful to metals,
When quality materials. .are us-
ed, .and the chimney is put up by
competent tradesmen, it can be
expected to give satisfactory ser-
vice throughout the life of the
house. 'A poorly built chimney, on
- the -other. hand, may require re-
_ pairs every few years. In the
long run, it will prove expensive.
There are a number of • good
prefabricated -chi/limeys on the
market which ,are acceptable for
use in NBA financed houses. If
the manufacturer's .installatiOn in-
structions are folloWed• carefully
these chimneys will fulfill their
— task efficiently.
In many instances a chimney
has. two flues, one for the fire-
place and one,. for the central
heating unit. Since this type of
chimney is more in. a.ssive than a
- single-flue chimney; . can be
, blended • 'mere r -easily With the
.gefferal - appearance 'of the house.
A chimney can.heelmilt either
tmside : ca outside one •buillding, or
within tlYd house itself. Mere are
advantages in having the chim-
ney enclosed within the structure,
since •sonieof the -heat that Would
otherwise be lost is. radiated
- through the living area. Moreover;
an inside chimney is not subject
to as large, a variation of tena-
Pemture between top 'and bottom,
and condensation . which releases
destructive acids is less likely to
do damage.
Beth exterior and interior mas-
onry chimneys are built in basi-
°ally the same fashion, The eX-
pesed portion of the chimney a-
bove the roDf,should not be more
than four times. the diameter of
the chimney, unless bracing is
provided. In any case, the chin-
nay should .project at least three
feet above its highest point of
contact with the roof. If it is
within ten feet of the ridge or
roof peak, the chimney top Must
be at least two feet higher than
the ridge for proper performance,
Masonry chimneys are heavy
and their footingS have to support
a greater load per square foot
than footings for any other part
of the honSe. For outside Chim-
neys the footing can be pOured as
one unit within the foundation
footing. For interior chimneys,
however, a separate footing is re-
quired. It is unsound to have a
basement column and a chimney
share 'the same footing, unless it
has been designed by an engineer.
A masonry chinmey with a flue
lining needs only one row of
brick, but two rows are required
if the flue is not lined- Chimney
lining IS usually made of vitreous
clay tile. For a furnace flue the
minimum inside diameter of the
lining is seven inches, but a fire-
place flue needs a larger cross-
section. Each heating unit should
have its own flue, except for gas-
fired appliances which may share
a common flue if special auto-
matic shut-offs .are provided• for
each -connected appliance. For ex-
ample, the stove, the furnace and
the water heater, all using gas as
fuel, may be connected to the one
chimney flue.
To reduce fire: hazard jointS be-
tween chimney 'bricks should be
completely filled with mortar.
This applies both to the vertical
and horizontal joints. When the
mortar has begun to set the joints
should be "pointed", including
joints in that section of the chim-
ney to be concealed within the
walls, Pointing hardens the sin--
face. When the excess mortar
squeeied out'of a -joint is left
hanging along the edge, it dries
out too rapidly •and crumbles a-
The mortar inside the joint
is sometimes ,,affected as well.
Jeints in the flue lining should
not line •up horizontally with
joints iii the' brick-Work eneazing
the flue. At times it is difficult
to avoid' doing 'this but joints
should be staggered as mach ..as
possible.

The Ontario Hospital Services
Conimission has problents,.addres-
sing mail.to perSons on "general
delivery" and rural. routes.. The
problems arise when more than
one person have the same initials.
Because of certain mechanical
requirements and limitations, the
CommiSsiork asked only for the
family name and two initials' when
residents were originally- register-
ed. This works well in most cases
but difficulty arises when there
is more than one "T. J. Brown". or
"L. D. Jackson" for example, on
one rural route. However, a way
has been found to give better
identification as cases are discov-
ered.
If any. of our readers have had
this difficulty, the, 'best - thing tO
do is to advise th Commission.
They will require your name' and
hospital insurance number, and
the name, or nickname by which
you are known to your PdatthaStei4
