At the end .of World Wee
45 million people were .homeleeer-,•
living camps and barracks,
Twelve yearn after the war 10
million were still living in these
pesepoole of 'human misery, At
this time four enerY young ragn
from , England toured the camps
Of Europe to see these deepening
people. On their return to Eng-.
land they iesieted oat something
be done and they were successful
in rousing 'the government of the
United Kingdom to protest to the
United Nations and demand more
action„
In ..this way World Refugee
Year was born, This was to be
en intensified effort on the part
of countries, governments, orgah-
izetioes and individuals to do
more to wive this problem. Sew
enty countries pledged themselves
to take part-Australia has taken
6,000, Norway 1,400 handicapped;
overcrowded Belgium - 3,000, Swe-
den
,
.2,000 T.B. cases:- Canada has'
taken 100 TB, cases-in all about
400 people.
In Canada the Canadian Com-
mittee for World Refugee Year
was formed. Forty-three organiza-
tions sponsored this committee:
the Anglican Church, Canadian
Red Cross, CARE of 'Canada,
Catholic Women's League of Can-
ada, Jewish Congress, etc., etc.
So, in Huron County a com-
mittee was formed to do its share
in this humanitarian effort. lit

Apple growing ,district across
Canada each jay claim to the die-,
tinetion, of producing the most
fleVooeful fruit in the country,
Their blossoms all seem to me to
smell as sweet whether they
bleten, in British Columbia, Cent.
ral Ontario, or in Nova Scotia's
Annapolis Valley.
The soft air of the west coast
province, which had stolen a mar-
oh this year on the rest of Cati-
Oa by enjoying an early, Warm
spring, was heavy with the pung-
ent odour of many orchards when,
to the tune of an army of bees, a
memory Stole into my thought,
J'us't a year ago, I remembered,
I sat in the auditorium of Acadia
University at .Wolfviele, Nova Sco-
tie, and watched a brown hatred,
.starry-eyed coed experience the
highlight of her young career. D.
V, Gonder, viceeneeklent and gen-
eral manager of the Atlantic Re-
gion of the Canadian National
Railways, C. L. Walker, assistant
general' manager a the Royal
Bank of Canada and Mrs.. J, E.
Ahern, wife of a member of the
Halifax Legislature, had chosen
Janet Kinsman of Bridgetown as
Queen Annapolis. Her coronation
and reign provided a whirl of soc-
ial activities for the duration of
the Annapolis Valley Blossom Fes-
tival, a publicity giant created
years ago by a group of business-
men to promote this tourist at-
traction.
Several natives of the craggy,
coastal province were, tired of
hearing it referred to as one of
the poor stepchildren in the Can-
adian family. Dependent almost
entirely on fishing, mining and
forestry as its source of income,
its beauty, rampant with legend
had, they thought, been too long
ignored as en economic asset. This
was the reasoning behind promo-
ting publicity which an annual
blossbrn festival in the Land of
Evangeline inspired.
I remembered that the small
town of Kentville, whose business
section is quaintly built in a.
square, was jammed to the curbs
on that memorable day with Val-
ley folk and tourists, not only
'from other Canadian provinces,
but from across the border as
well.
When I was driven out to the
Experimental Farm to photo-
graph the Queen and her bevy of
13 beautiful Maids, who had also
contested . for her erown, Was .
told the legend of the Bishop's,
Pieleiri, It was claimed to be the
most delicious apple ever grown
en Canadian, soil, but scorned by
buyers after the first World War
because of its colour, Yellow,
with a pale rosy cheek, punches-
ere, especially in the British mar-
ket. claimed the peblic would, not
buy 'the pippin because shopPers.
preferred a red apple.
Beautiful 'as the young Queen
was, surrounded by a million.
blooms, the real 01411 .for me that
early spring morning was the ro-
mance of an' .industry trying to
perfect a red Bishop's pippin, Un-
der .4 dozen or more plastic tents
were hand pollinated trees which
might prove to. be the answer to
a. lost market.
Such endeavour on the part of
experimentalists will surely be re-
warded. But I doubt if the sheep
nosed apples of British Columbia
or the Macintosh and. Northern
Spies of Ontario will lose .any of
their popularity with, apple polish-
ers seeking to gain favour with
their teachers. The cause of Eve's
downfall will apparently forever
have an appetite appeal just so
long as it is red.
This reasoning, as I later trav-
elled by train through TieCes fruit
belt, aroused the first pangs of
homesickness I have experienced
in years. I wanted to hurry-back
to the 41 gnarled old trees I can.
see from our own house. They
have so far evaded the sub-divid-
er's bulldozer and must, by now,
be ready to burst into bloom.
Where we live, the danger of any
competition in the apple market
is growing less and less each year,
as famous old orchards are dem-
olished to make way for new
homes and factories.
