Canada has been a nation for not quite a hundred years. In that time Canadians have earned a way of life unequalled outside North America and not even approached by countries whose histories go back thousands of years . . countries such as China. Part of Canada's success comes' from her ability to produce steel. Canada, with a population under 18,000,000, produced 660 pounds of steel per perion last year. China, with a 'population of 600,000,000, turned out 25 pounds per person. This higher productivity comes from the factories Canadians have built. For example, The Steel Comp- any of Canada, Limited has invested more than $300,000,000 in its plants and equipment since 1940. Canadians produce more mainly because Canadian companies • are continually improving their plants and equipment, TIH r STEEL COMPANY -OF CANADA LIMITED MONTREAL GANANOOLIE HAMILTON DRANTPORD TORONTO Canadian-made steel from Conodian-owned plants 601112 iI Wesley-Willis Sunday School Executive - Audience a Fashion Show, Tot,' Thutsdoy, .March 24, 1960- Clinton News-Record.--Page 3' .1.0.0..F, Lodge Activities .10 10. ineetMg, April 19, Ron closed the meeting with prayer, ia/. half hour was .enjoyed, The...Sunday School Executive of WePley-Willis. Spring, Manager SAME ARGUMENT The Editor: Arguments for a "Yes" vote 'on a local option vote are usually the same arguments: convenience, ligalizing illegal activities, and so on. Quite often, however in an, effort to influence public opinion, an effort is made to cloud the issue. • If the real reason that those who wish the affirmative vote, is a desire for increased availability of alcoholic beverages, all well and good. We simply wish that they would! be honest about it, When "responsible individuals" claim that Clinton's. economy de- pends on an increasing availabil- ity of beverage alcohol, we would seriously question such a conten- t405.. To be specific, "as long as many prices for goods of many 'varieties rare 'high, or 'as long as certain types of goo& (not includ- ing alcohol) are not available at home, Clintonians will shop in Stratford, London, or wherever else that's handy. No longer is a journey of 35 to 50 miles consid- ered 'prohibitive. ONLY WORST GASES Dear Editor: I don't think capital punish- ment should be dropped but I do think severe punishment should be used in more of the worst case% such as assault, kidnapping and robberies that involve bodily in- jury- When I say severe I mean the lashes and also televised for all to see. It appears to me that if we stop severe punishment there will be more lives lost only they will be innocent lives instead of guilty lives, 'G. W. Clinton, Ontario, March 17, 1960; FRED'S VIEW! The Editor; Since it is almost impossible to find any Technical School or College that offers a course in evecutioaing, I.find my conscience bathers me every time I wish to hang one of my undesirable neigh- bours and pay an amateur to do my dirty work. There must be a better way. When we want the undesirable neighbour killed, could we pay a doctor of medicine to do the job as a person most able to end a life most effectively? or perhaps a priest of some church, since we send him to the condemned citi- zen, and by his training he would be the one most likely to know just the most suitable moment to separate a soul from its body, or put asunder that which God has joined together. Or the fairest• plan would be to look over the list' of neighbours and ,pick an adult at random somewhat as we pick a neighbour for jury duty. The man or woman- so picked could visit the prisoner any time after sentence has been 'pronounc- ed by an unwilling judge and then could stab him ar her, or shoot him or her, or perhaps -just drop a cyanide tablet in the coffee of his last supper . . . it would make no difference what method is used so long 'as the man dies. As decent citizens' we should not ask somebOdy else to do owl unpleasant tasks. —FRED SLOMAN. Capreol, Ontario, March 18, 1960 Good character is still the best collateral for a loan. Sentence Must Go," is an exhibition of men becoming so soft-hearted 'that they become sett-headed; . . It will be most refreshing, sir, when we read of your interest in the victims of cold-blooded crimes, which are In- as in the perpetrators of these sadistic and cruel murders as well creasing.„ The present Dominion Cabinet is showing a lack of moral cour- age in dealing with men who would just as soon ” kill as eat.
