Harold Lawson Chairmen
Hospital Shows Surplus..
"Harold O. Lawson was elected
chairman of the board of Clinton
Public Hospital at the appeal
meeting of that gropp one Monday
T4gitrt, Mr. Lawson succeeds Har-
ry Ball, who served, for three
years,
The Hospital Board is made np
'of 12 members: six-directors elee-
'ted; one appointed by the County'
of Huron, William L, Morlok; the
Mayor, one from the Medical as-
sociation, Dr, Richard W, Street,
Blyth; .one from the hospital aux-
.j.liary, the president, Mrs. E.
Beecher Menzies,
The six directors are put on for
three year terms. This year Geor-
ge H. Jefferson who has served for
about a quarter of a century on
the board, and H. C, Lawson were
the. men completing their terms
this year.
Mr. Jefferson expressed his de-
sire to retire, saying that it was
time . younger men were taking
on the job. He nominated .Joseph
Murphy as a replacement, and this
ncaninnee was elepted.'
Monteith and Monteith were re-
hired as auditors.
A striking committee was head-
ed by G. M. Counter and Judge
Frank Fingland, for committees
on the beard. Mr. Counter is the
vice-chairman of the board.
There were 15 applications re-
ceived for the position of seere-
tary-treasurer of the board follow-
ing the annual meeting.
The Hospital showed a surplus
of $3,504.07 after provisions for
depreciation of $11,860.61. This is
the first time in years that a sur-
plus has been shown. Chairman
Harry Ball indicated that this was
due in great part to the operation
of the Ontario Hospital Associa-
tion. He asked Superintendent
Hilda Smith to take back to the
staff the appreciation of the board
for their good work.
Miss Smith reported an increase
in all phases of hospital work, ex-
cept that the number of births
had remained about the same, 306.
There were 1,692 admissions and
62 deaths occurred. During the
past two years there have been
617 births, with no still births.
Miss Smith reported 787 surg-
ical operations (217 of them maj-
or); 1,946 x-rays.
Mrs. Menzies reported a total
receipts of $1,609 for the hospital
auxiliary, $882 spent 'at the hospi-
tal, and a balance of $727. There
are 435 members in the associa-
tion.

commented that with the govern-
ment insurance plan there should
not be the same need for activity
on the part of the auxiliary, but
that certain parts of the work
were essential. He said the large
membership speaks loudly for the
interest in the hospital shown: by
the public.
The judge noted that nearly 90
percent of the operating revenue
of the hospital comes from insured
patients.
N. W. Trewartha, a former
member of the board, spoke brief-
ly, noting his pleasure in the sur-
plus shown.
Enrolment Down At
Public School May
Mean Peak Reached
A slight decrease in enrolment
at the Clinton Public School was
reflected last Thursday night in
the report made to the board by
Principal Bert Gray. There was
543 in January, a decrease of
about 12 since the previous month.
Preliminary negotiations to ob-
tain land for a future "second
public school" for Clinton were
laid aside for the time being, until
it was decided whether or not the
public school population would
grow larger.
Estimates are to he in at the
next meeting for the budget so
that it can be brought down in
time for the council meeting in
April.
