Has D.C. recently tried to pro-
cure reprints of classics? I Can
assure him that Clinton Library
orders 'them regularly: Five were
included in the fall order, but
have not all been received, It
takes longer to get them th'an
books, currently listed.
Book orders are placed several
times each year, and have to be
divided 'careftilly in the.following
classifications: non-fiction, fiction,
and juvenile. The payment of the
Provincial library grant depends
on adhering to this procedure.
.Both the Qpcx and Clinton Pub-
lie School have,representatives on
the local library board, and it is
their duty to see that the needs
of the students :are supplied.
. The increased circulation proves
that •the adult readers are finding
more and more pleasure and profit
from Clinton Library.
At all times the librarian and
book committee welcome sugges-
tions concerning books that may
appeal to our reading public.
- At •this point I wish to give
some facts and figures that may
be of interest to the, public: In the
year 1959 the 'expenditures for
books, magazines and papers was
$1,040.58. Since these figures
were compiled an order of over
$100 has been placed. During the,
year 80 non-fiction, 106 fiction and'
145 juvenile volumes were receiv-
ed.
Do people read? Circulation
figureS for the past year are: Non-
fiction, 599; Fiction, 13,694, Juven-
ile, 8,335:

I have a. suggestion for D.C. It
may riot be feasible at the lubni-
ent, but I believe that if he were
to make a survey of the urban
libraries in. Ontario towns having
a population of 2,500 to 3,000, he
would be convinced that the good
old .Clinton Public Library plays
its part well in catering to the
literary needs of not only the cit-
izens of Clinton, but to many in
the surrounding .area,

DIEFEINCE OF:LIBRARY
The Editor,
Clinton News-Record,
It is an established' faet that
when young people go forth in
the world, whether In puma of higher imosviodge or in search of
more lucrative positions, the old,
familiar things sometimes sussel
from comparison with newer fa;
Could this fact account for the
criticism levelled at that venerable
institution, The Clinton Public
Library? I refer, of course, to
the letter published in last week's
issue of your, paper, and signed
"D. C."
Most citizens, who give the mat-
ter more than a passing thought,
are justifiably proud of our lib-
rarY.
Here the young seek pleasant
and profitable reading for their
leisure hours. 'Students are en-
couraged to use the facilities of
the library, and often 'books are
grouped in convenient places for
them. Many volUmes are carefully
selected to meet the, demands of
the curriculum for both element-
ary and sseondary. schools. I re-
Call that several books were ad-
ded when the social studies course
for public schools was revised,
These books are used by' adults
as well as students.
D.C. suggests that more science
and mathematics books should be
ordered. In checking the list of
books ordered in late autumn I
see that six science titles appear.
Mathematics is a study that is
usually done in schools under the
direction of a teacher or tutor,
and from n prescribed text. For
that reason I fail to see why any
extra books should be put on the
shelvei, of the local library.
