"A large, rather chunky one
with a big bill resembling a card-
inal . . beautiful colourings you
say, black, white and a great deal
of yellow . , Why, your visitors
are the evening grosbeaks „
there are a: great many around
. . in. fact, I would call it a
'Grosbeak Year' because they seem
to be everywhere in our vicinity."
"Yes, I've answered four dif-
ferent in as many days re-
garding these nomads of the north-
land . . Their nesting grounds
are in the zones where fir, spruce
and other conifers abound, the
Northern shores of Lake Super-
ior . .
"The grosbeaks are gregarious
and while nesting, continue to live
in flocks . . . Many remain in
their nesting • locality all winter
. . . Others get the wanderlust
and visit in Southern Ontario and
as far south as Kentucky .
"Around here they are often
seen on the higinveys in huge
flocks— . . apparently picking up
grit . . . They are picking up
grit, but chiefly because it is im-
pregnated with salt of which they
are very 'fond . . The evening
grosbeak scout goes around to In-
vestigate the feeding boards
And when he finds pleasing food,
the flock comes to feed . . They
are very fond of sunflower seeds,
I notice, also seeds of any tree
such as ash or maple . . .
"These visitors stay around,
eating heartily for about three
days. Then they move off to a
neighbouring feeder table. Often
they leave the locality altogether,
returning at intervals during the
winter.
"The song Of the evening gros-
beak is distinctive . . . several
warbles ending `in a sweet clear
whistle . Their nest of twigs
is in an evergreen tree . . . They
lay three to four eggs, bluish
green with spots of brown and
grey . .
