It is at this time a hostess will
seize with glee almost any good
reason for trying out a new recipe
or 'showing off her gift coffee tab-
le. I didn't realize, when I men-
tIoned that it had been just a year
since I hung up My editorial cap
and dreamed up, the Diary of a
Vagabond, that I would be an, ex-
cuse for a celebration. During
the course of the conversation at
a previous party that . set off a
manor display of gastronomic de-
lights, I happened to mention that
the one thing I really missed was
my old swivel chair. My steno-
grapher's bulge had become con-
siderably flattened, I complained,
by being parked on the hard seat
Of an ordinary' straight backed
chair, as I typed the weekly entry
in this diary,
I love surprises and when I Was
blindfolded during the course of
an evening affair, I had a premon-
ition something very unexpected
was about -to happen, It did. I
was seated on a plastic cushion
that felt like a greatly enlarged
inhanaster and propelled from one
end of my hostess's living room to
the other. .Amid shouts of "Now
you'll really have to produce" the
blindfold was removed and I found
a huge card hung . over the back
of a brand new swivel chair. "To
the Vagabond, may she travel far.
From her envious home-bound
friends."
Have you ever noticed, there's
one at every party. You know,
the type of person who wears her
diplomacy near the zero mark
most of 'the time. In the midst of
the hilarity as my new, coral plas-
tic, foam rubber and chrome char-
iot was being pushed about on its
brand new ballbearing casters a
enough to knew she would pro-
bably cause a flurry by her re-
by rail and that I waxed entireS-
service and the ground I cover in each year in Search 'of the mater-
iestie meet of the time about the
good it is? I never use it." She
how my 'travels had been largely
ada's railroad to the Indians. Whet
squeaky little voice piped up, 441
can't see why we don't give Can-
for this column. She was smart
mark, but obviously ,she was not
ready for the information I fired
at her, ••
"A ii, but you do use the rail-
road. Every hour of every clp.y,
of every week in every year,'•
replied.
Starting with her shoes, asked
her where she thought the dyes mid
chemicals came from that cured
the hide of the calf that had pro-
duced the leather. This., I said
went for her stockings, lingerie,
dress, hat, bag and coat, HoW
did she think the steel in the ear
She drove arrived at the nianufac-'
furer's factory, or the groceries
she consumed -cduld finally be ser-
ved at her table, Somewhere
along the line, the railroad had
been responsible for the safe ship-
ping and arrival of goods that con-
tribute to most of our creature
comforts, either in- their raw state
or , the completed form. • If it wer-
en't for the railroad, I. contended,
our standard of living could be
greatly curtailed. I also main-
tained that costs would soar if the
.only mode of shipment was limit-
ed to vehicular or air transporta-
tion. • This set off a clatter of conver-
sation that sounded like a travel-
logue. The generous little lady
who would present the Indians
with the after offering me
a lift home, ended up by carrying
the chair to her car. As we rolled
along on rubber (or could be ny-
lon) that had probably coasted in
its raw state many a mile on
steel, she asked about the com-
forts of rail travel, its cost and re-
lative advantages. I know one
thing, 'she'll never slip her toes
into those blue shoes that could
poke the eyes out of a snake with-
out remembering their pigment
undoubtedly was transported ac-
ross our land by rail most likely
from a ship that docked in Van-
couver after a voyage from India
where, I am told, indigo dye is
perfected.
The SuncIPY School Executive
of Wesley. Willis United Church
met ip. the church parlor on the
evening of January 20 with an at-
tendance of ten. Rea Steepe was
in charge and .opened the meeting
with prayer.
In the absence of the secretary,
Mrs. Steepe, the minutes Were
read by Mrs. Holland. In the ab-
sence of the treasurer, R.
the financial report Was given by
Mrs. It Elliott.
A discussion an the recent
Christmas program brought the
suggestion that next year an ef-
fort be made to give every mem-
ber the opportunity to take part
in the program, also that the need
for homemade candy be more pub-
licized.
A' possible Sunday School sleigh
ride was discussed but decided a-
gainst. In its place the Primary
Sunday School planned to hold a
party for the juniors and their
mothers on February 6. The sen-
ior Sunday School planned for a
skating party, lunch and film and
set February 12 as tentative date.

In a small town such as the one
in which I reside, any excuse for
a Party is always weicorne. Bah, tea and brides-to-be are well show-

after the holiday season when par-
