doing at Achievement Day, Mrs.
Keith Meehan was the leader and
was assisted. by Mrs-. Ed. Davies.

superintendent and Mrs. Arthur
Grange had charge. Promotions
took place, Mrs. Maurice Bean's
group was received through the
gates by Miss M. R. Jackson and
Mrs. Leonard Areharribault's by
Mrs. Bean. Mrs, Oliver Anderson,
president of the Woman's Mission-
ary Society, conducted the instal-
lation of new officers.
Baby-sitting by. African
was defnonatrated by..Vancy Aai-
derson using Shelly Grange's doll
as model, and Robert Wilkan tried
carrying as basket on his head as
done by the Afrinan boys. Kenya
on the map of Africa was explain-
ed and the use-of drums-to sum-
mon folk to meetings and partial-,
lar events.'
The story of the reading class
from the second chapter of the
study book was told. Allan Craig
and Robert Wilkin received. the
offering. Several answered the
roll call with the payment of
fees. NeW officerS are: president,

Mr, and Mrs., Allan Bowles re-
cently celebrated their golden
wedding in Vancouver. Mrs. Bow:
les was well known in this com-
munity being Christina (Ten.a)
Sprung and -was born in Hullett
township. She is the daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs, Richard
Sprung and attended. SS 9, Hullett
for her early et-location.
She was a school teacher and
taught in the Nile district, in Clin-
ton and other district schools. Mr.
Bowles home Was near Lucknow.
They were married in Calgary
50 years ago and, both passed their
83rd birthdays in December. For
many years he was principal of
Magee High Schools but is now re-
tired, living in Vancouver.
They have one daughter, Mri.

A telephone euchre party was
held at the home of Mr,. and Mrs,
Amen Coleman, on January Q,
when three tables were in play',
sponsored -by the Order of the
Eastern, Star, Exeter chapter.

Announces Award
For Joij-rOalism
The London Free Press will pro-
vide an annual Newspaper Editor-
ial Award, eambining financial aid
and on-job training for a student
entering the. University of West-
ern. Ontario who demonstrates "a
lively interest in journalism," it
was announced today.,
The award will have a each
value of $250 for each year a win-
ner attends university prior to
graduation and the winner will be
selected from among students
from the 14 counties of Western
Ontario who enter journalism,
general arts, or other degree
courses at the university.
In addition, The Free Press will
provide isn-jab training in editor
ial department Work for a min-
imum of 1,5 weeks each summer,
and pay the student "riot less than
$1,000 each summer."
The object of the award is' to
create interest among high school
students in the opportunities of a
newspaper career and to give
them an opportunity for educa-
tional- advancement and practical
training.
Dr. G: E. Hall, president of the.
university, said in a letter to The
Free Press: "The award will be a
great help in stimulating students
from eeeondary schools to enter
directly or indirectly the field of
jeurnalism. I arm happy indeed to
accept this award."
Those eligible to apply are
Grade 13 students in any second-
ary school_ in the counties of
.Middlesex, 'Elgin, Kent, Lambton,
Huron, B'r'uce, Perth, Oxford,
Brant, Norfolk, Wellington, Wat-
C, A, Ware, and two grandchild-
ren, also of Vancouver, who join-.

Canadian Girls In Training
The Auburn Canadian Girl s in
Training of Knox Presbyterian
Church had a full attendance at
the first meeting of the new year.
Barbara Sanderson gave the °all
Ito worship and Barbara Mackay
led the music. Margaret Sander-,
son read Psalm 95, followed by
prayer by Rose Marie Haggitt.
Roll call was answered by each
girl telling a New Year's Resolu-
tion she had made. The minutes
were read by Margaret Haines.
Carole Brown gave. the financial
statement and gave thei year's .re-
port. The offering was received by
Judith Arthur and the ,prayer was
given by Marilyn Daer.
The chapter of the study book
"Paths that Cross" was told by
the assistant leader, Mrs. Duncan.

Mr, and Mrs. Elmore Hayter
were honoured at a party at the
home of Elgin Porter, on Friday,.
January 3, when directors and
wives of the Stanley Federation
of Agriculture' met to present
them with a gift, Mr. Hayter was
president of the organization last
year. The evening was spent in
playing progressive erokinole, with
the winners being:high, Mrs, Mel-
vin Graham and Harvey Hayter;
slow, Mr, and Mrs, Jack Scotch-
mer.
The address for the presenta.-
tion of a woolen motor rug and
a hammered aluminum relish dish
was read by Elgin. Porter, with
Leslie Armstrong making the
presentation. Mr. Hayter replied
fittingly.

Mrs. Collins conducted a con

mounted to $1.05. Pot-luck lunch
was served.
The next meeting will be on
Thursday, January 21, at the home
of Mrs. N. Manning,

quirements of the university; (2)
They have attended a minimum of
three years at one or more of the
secondary schools in the 14 coun-
ties; (3) They 'have demonstrated
to tea 'hers, local journalists, or
other responsible members of the
community their interest and ap-
parent capability in the field of
journalism.
A brochure outlining all details•
of the award will be distributed
to secondary, schools.. in ,the 14
counties in the near future.
