W, 373 Dank St.. Ottawa, One,Canada Failing to Take Ad-!—T vantage of Possibilities, ( Says Minister In South America, Canada had huge market almost at her door, offer ing tremendous trade possibilities, of which, so far, Canadian business men were failing to take advantage, manu facturers and exports were told re cently by F. C. T. O’Hara, Ottawa.,1 Deputy Minister of Trade and Com-! merce, at a meeting in Montreal. | Mr. OTIara recently has completed an extensive tour of South America,' which lasted nearly four months, dur-j Ing which he covered some 14,000 miles. .He gave a description of the various cities and countries he visit ed an dtlien showed what a gold nine 0 ftrade awaited Canadian busi ness men with sufficient enterprise to develop it. In round figures, he said, South America’s imports totalled $2,500,000,- 000, five countries between them con tributing most of the amount. They were Argentine, $850,000,000; Brazil, $406,000,000; Cuba, $295,000,000; Mexico, $195,000,000; Chile, $148,000,- 000. Competition for South American trade was keen, he warned. In recent years the United States had made the greatest progress and despite the huge investments of British capital in the southern continent, the north ern republic rapily was overhauling Great Britain as the big foreign trade factor there. United States traders were seeking trade expansion In progressive and in telligent fashion, M.r O’Hara continu ed, while British firms were guarding. their Interest most indifferently after holding a monoply in influence foreign business for more than years. British brains, British capital British experience in South America to-day were being employed in attend ing the trade of the United States at the expense of British trade, he as serted. United States exporters, he explained, were clever enough to see th dominating influence of the British commission houses connections, large plete knowledge as was done, in South quently they employed the services of British houses by giving larger commissions, attending more strictly to the needs of the country and manu facturing what was wanted, carrying on correspondence in Spanish and sending down expert factory men or mechanics and also expert salesmen to assist in selling -and giving service after the sale was made. Scope For Canada These services were open to Cana dian supporters for the asking, Mr. O’Hara declared. The head of every British commission house he had in terviewed had spoken in warmest terms of Canada and regretted Cana dian exporters were not interested in the South American market to the ex tent Canadian production justified. They all wanted to handle goods from Canada, he said, and were willing to give space free for the exhibition of samples. Furthermore, they were willing to give office desk room free to Canadian exporters desiring to send some one to South' America to look after their own special goods, to push sales, accompany commission houses travellers about the country, learn the language, get into the at- *Tnosphere of South American trade, and see what obstacles were to be surmounted and what competitors “What more could be asked?" Mr. O’Hara wanted to know. “Here are organization ready to extend Cana dian trade—big British organizations who bewail the ndifference of their own home firms whch have not yet awakened to the fact that their • supremacy is challenged." He described how vast were the selling organization of these British commission houses, on the spot every where throughout South ^America, British at heart, friendly to Canada, anxious to extend Empire trade. They had won the friendship of the South American people and Canadian exporters would have that added ad vantage in beginning business in that part of the world, thus- following tho example set by so' many United States firms which of late years had increased their business so enormous ly in South America. - -------- Britain Awaits Ibn Saud’s Reply op Desert Raids " . 1 London.—Having established that Ibn Saud, King of the Ilejjez, is not about to launch a holy war against Irak, the British Government is awaiting an answer to overtures made to the deser.t ruler to end tribal raiding on the border.
