A number from Hensall attended the Salvation Army concert at Grand Bend on Sunday put on by the Army band of London. Miss Marguerite and Doris Chap­ man, of Palmerston, visited for a few days with their grand mother, Mrs. Geo. Scott. Mr. Milton Love has greatly im­ proved the- appearance of his house by putting up a new verandah and having it nicely painted. Miss Ella McPherson, of Spokane, Wash., is visiting friends in town. Miss McPherson's many friends here were pleased to see her. The Sunday School picnic of the United Church will be held at'Bay­ field on Wednesday, July 27th. A good time is being looked for . Master Bobby Drysdale, who un­ derwent an operation in Victoria Hospital, London, returned home last week and is greatly improved. Mrs. E. Murray, of Detroit, who has been visiting friends in and around Hensall, re­ turned to her home on Wednesday. Mr. Wm. Fee accompanied by his sisters Misses Mary and Sarah Fee have’ returned home after a very pleasant motor trip to different points. Mr. Lewis Smith, of Detroit, sang a very pleasing solo in the United Church on Sunday morning last which was greatly enjoyed by the congregation. The W. S. of Carmel Presbyterian church held a birthday in the base­ ment of the church on Thursday evening last. A good program was given after which a social hour was spent. Mrs. John Johnston, who has been visiting for the past month with her daughter, Mrs. Douglass at Hyde Park has returned home, accompan­ ied by her little grand daughter, who will visit here for a few weeks. Miss Mae Simpson, who has been visiting for two weeks in town and at the Bend, returned to Detroit with them on Sunday. Tlie services in. the United church on Sunday last were largely attend­ ed. Rev. Mr. Sinclair preached at the morning service and at the ev­ ening service Rev. Mr. McDonald, of Egmondville took charge of the Cgfcvice, . accompanied by’ the- Eg­ mondville choir which was greatly enjoyed by the large audience pre­ sent; Rev. Mr. Sinclair accompan­ ied by tlie choir took the service at Egmondville on Sunday evening. The choir rendering two anthems, a solo by Mrs.- Lee Hedden and a solo by Mr. Sam. Rennie, Rev. Mr. Sin­ clair preaching to a large congrega­ tion. —- Hensall -had a successful baseball tournament Wednesday afternoon, with a large crowd present. • The first game was between Zurich and- Exeter and was won by the former with a score of 3 to 2 for seven in­ nings. In the second game between Fullarton and Hensall the latter won 7 to ”6. ' The game was tie at the end of the seventh and an extra innings was-played.After the sec­ ond game a clown softball game that kept the crowd in laughter whs staged the players having some very funny costumes. •; In* the final game of ball between Zurich and Hensall Hendail carried ■ off the pennant when they defeated Zurich 21 to 11 for seven innings. DEATH OF MRS. W. L. FORREST There died at her home, lot 1, con­ cession 1, Tuckersmith,, a mile and a quarter south of Hensall, early on Friday morning Mrs. W. L. For­ rest in her 65th year. Mrs. Forrest suffered a stroke this spring but was able to be about until Wednes­ day when she was stricken again and did not rally. She was a daugh­ ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Wolfe, of' Stephen township -and liv­ ed in that township until her mar­ riage to Mr. Forrest when they mov­ ed to lot 13, con. 5, Stanley, where they lived until this spring when they moved to the farm of Dr. Moir, south of Hensall, where Mr. Forrest, is engaged as superintendent Of the Dr. Moir farms* Besides her ber­ eaved husband she leaves to mourn her loss, one son, Lawrence, of Brucefleid, and one daughter, Miss Beth at home. Roeszler have moved into the home of Mr. Fred, Wuerth.- The many friends of Samuel Eilber of Ubly, Mich., who formerly lived here, will regret to learn of his ill­ ness and hope for- a speedy recovery. His brother, Henry Eilber is spend­ing a few-days'’with him this- week. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert K. Eilber and Bernice were called to Lucknow on Thursday on account of the death of their neice, Dorothy Anderson, who passed away quite suddenly after being operated on for appendi­citis. Mrs, Giryin accompanied them and will remain some time with her , daughter, Mrs. Fred. Anderson. A new and up-to-date switchboard has been installed at the Crediton central. Mrs. Sam. King and babe have returned from the Sick Children’s Hospital, We afe glad to hear the babe .had a successful operation and is getting along nicely. Mrs. R. J. Huston, of Grand Rapids, is visiting with Mrs. Fred. Kerr for a few days. Miss Helen Trothen, of London, is spending her holidays with Miss Lulu Kerr. Mrs. S. Collins and daughter, of Windsoi- are visiting at the.home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kerr. Mr. Garnet Sweitzer, of Long Is­ land, N.Y., is visiting his mother, Mrs. John Sweitzer and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Borland, (fire-chief) of Timmins, Ont., is visiting with Messrs Sam. and Joe. Wein. The services last Sunday at the Evangelical church were quite well attended in spite of the strenuous week and summer days. Both the morning and evening services were in accord with the occasion. The morning full of admonition for those whose day’s program is strenuous and the evening for those who are contemplating a vacation.- Vaca­ tion’ dangers were pointed out and the way to remedy. Mrs. Hess pre­ sided at the pipe organ in the ab­ sence of Miss Gaiser, who is attend­ ing a summer institute in Quebec. Many visitors graced the pews with their presence. Some of the visitors assisted the choir. -.The Sunday school attendance and interest ranks first class. Services next Sunday in the usual manner. The evening ser­ vice will have a special subject and lovers of . summer sports and base­ ball players are all cordially invited. The choir continues’ to function throughout the summer months. Mr. and Mrs. Archie Haist and family of Pelham Centre, spent the week-end at the Evangelical parson­ age blunging with them a sample of white ox heart sweet cherries from tile Niagara district. Evelyn Sippell is on her Vacation to Chesley: Elva Wuerth, to Detroit and Mary Gettinger to Walkterton. A large number of relatives and friends spent Sunday dinner and afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Art. Amy, it being the occasion of Mrs. Amy’s birthday. Hill, spent Sunday In London with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Dearing. Mrs. Rd. Hill received the sad news last Week of the death of her cousin, Mr. Gus. Baker, who droped dead at his home. in Winnipeg. A collection for missions will be taken at both services. Every­ body is cordially invited to attend. Morenz and children, of Detroit, are visiting with relatives. ELIMVILLE Mr. Carman Cann spent Sunday at Mr. Will, Johns. Next Sunday morning the Live Oak Mission Cirle will have charge of the service, the pastor being on his vacation. Everybody welcome. Miss Gladys Passmore, of Hen- sall, visited in the neighborhood last Saturday, Mr. Wellington Bell, of Detroit, spent Sunday last at his home here. The heavy wind and rain storm last Wednesday was the cause of considerable damage to roofs and trees. Several barns had portions i of shingles blown off and many trees were blown down in bushes and or­ chards. Mr. Robert Rowcliffe, brother of M'rs. Sam'l Pym, was badly injured at Mr. E. Pym’s when the wagon and hayloader went over him. CENTRALIA Rev. R. Fulton Irwin was called away to conduct a funeral near Stratliroy this week. Last Sunday morning Rev. Capt. Garbutt, of London, spoke in the interests of the Bible Society in the United church and in the evening the sermon was preached by Rev. W. H. Irwin’? of McLeod, Alberta, nephew of‘ tbfe’^pastor, who is east on a visit to his home in Clinton. Mr. Freeman Mills of Wyoming was home over the week-end. Miss Webster, of Uxbridge, i§ vis­ iting at the home of her uncle; Mr. A. Mitchell. Miss M. Rowland, of Whitby, is spending her vacation with Mrs. W. Rowland. Cliff. Holt, of Sarnia. Mr. and Mrs. Holt at one time lived in this township, living and owning what was once the Hotel at Khiva. While both are advanced in years* they are hale and hearty. Subjects for next Sunday, morning “A Preacher From the Grave”; evening, "The Somebodies and the Nobodies.” The forty-piece Salvation Army Band of London, drew a large crowd of music lovers to hear the sacred concert on the Grand Bend beach on Sunday afternoon. In the even­ ing the band gave a programme in the Casino, of vocal and band num­ bers, which was thoroughly enjoyed by a capacity crowd. The men’s softball league is go­ ing strong with a game scheduled for every night the rest of the sea­ son. Judging from the brand of ball that is being played, the spec­ tators are in store for some exciting games, and the battle for the silver cups will be no mean contest. Every night is seeing bigger crowds at the Casino, and Don Bar- Kalacazoo, Mich., are still keeping everybody in good humor with their pep and are planning many surpris­ es for tlfe rest of the season. Every night is "Specialty Night,” at the Casino, as something new in the line of jazz and fun is given by this “Ace of Jazz Bands.” The Old Time Fiddlers Contest at the Casino, on Monday night was a great success, and brought out a large crowd of spectators. Twelve fiddlers contested for the silver cups which were awarded as follows: Class over 55 years of age, 1st Mr. Wm. Hyde, Hensall; 2nd Mr. Robt. Bonthron, Hensall,.- Mr. Bonthron is 82 years of age. Class under 55 years of age, 1st Mr. Del. Coulter, Forest; 2nd Mr. Walter McNickle, Farquhar. Prizes were also given to a twelve year old girl and a twelve year old boy, Miss Bolton, Hensall and Master William Stan- lake, Exeter. Mr. Hatter of Exeter captured the special prize for step dancing, which brought much ap­ plause from the audience. Follow­ ing the judging the Old Time Fid­ dlers played for the square dances, which were much enjoyed by young and old alike. GREENWAY The Mission Band of the United church will hold a raspberry social on August 3rd. Mr. and Mrs. Merton Morley, of St. Thomas are holidaying in the neighborhood. Rev. J. M. Colling’s subject next Sunday afternoon will be “A Voice From the Grave.” ® Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Brophey have moved into their home on W. T. Uhlen’s farm. The storms last week did some damage to buildings and trees but all are glad it was no worse. Mrs. W. H. Hayter is visiting her daughters in Detroit. Miss Myrtle Luther is home for the holidays. Mrs. Prouty and children, of Ex­ eter, visited her parents, Mr. and Mis. J. Turner. Mrs. J. E. Hodgins is recovering from her recent illness. Mr. and Mrs. J. Wellman have been visiting relatives here. Mi. Geo. Saunders and Billy, of WatrOus, iSask., are visiting 'Mr. and Mrs. E. McPherson. Miss Dorothy Luther is holiday­ ing with, her cousin, Miss Fern Luther, of Brinsley. We congratulate the entrance pupils of the West school. M. Curts (honors), H. Isaac, V. Hutchinson, V. Rock and N. Wilson all being successful. Also all the pupils of the South school viz A. McGregor, K. Rock and A. Steeper. It speaks well for both teachers and'pupils when the record is 100 per cent. (hARTER—BUCKINGHAM NUPTIALS The homo of Mr. William Buck­ ingham, Lucknow, was the scene of a pretty ceremony on Tuesday, July 5 th when his only daughter, Jessie Mary, became tho bride of Mervin Walter Carter, Clandeboye. Rev. Charles Cumming, pastor of Ailsa Craig United church, officiated in the presence of relatives and a few intimate friends. The bride wore a gown of pink georgette embriodered in silver and gold and she carried a shower bouquet of Victoria roses. Lawrence and Albert Kirk of Salvador, Sask., with then* brides, are on their honeymoon visiting friends here. They are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kirk, formerly of Kirkton. ANNIE GILPIN BURIED Word has oeen received of the death of Miss Annie Gilpin, who died on Saturday at the home of her neice, Mrs. D. Tilton, of Tillsonburg. Miss Gilpin was a resident of this village for a number of years and was an active member in missionary and Sunday school work. She was 84 years of age and is survived by one brother, Joshua, of Brussels, and two sisters, Sarah, of Los Angeles and Mrs. Joseph Doupe, of Brandon. Gunning gave a reading on Christian Stewardship. Mrs. Will Morley gave a reading "Get Somebody Else. ’ All enjoyed very much the solo by Mrs. Frank Squire, "Open the Gates of the Temple." Several Watch­ tower Heralds responded. Mrs. (Rev.) Irwin closed the meeting with prayer. All then enjoyed a most sociable time and tea was served. Friends were also present from Goderich. Mr. and Mrs. John Hey, of Zurich, were calling on friends in our burg recently. Miss C. McKaig, of Cromarty, is visiting with Mrs. C. Gardiner. Mr. and Mrs. John Hodgert attend­ ed the funeral on Sunday of the late Mrs. Kinsman at Hfensall. Master Freeman McGill is getting along nicely aftei* having his tonsils removed. The sympathy of the community is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Mc­ Donald in the sudden loss of their eldest daughter, Mary.
