McDonell.—A splen­ did entertainment was given in the Town Hall on Thursday evening last by the choir of Egmondville United church, under, the auspices of Hen­ sail United church. The program which was long and varied consist­ ed of songs readings and choruses, etc. and concluded with the presen­ tation of a scene from the Merchant of Venice. Following the program the visitors were entertained by the local , choir in the schoolroom of the United church here.—Mr. and Mrs. .John Reid and little child, of Lon­ don, visited over Good Friday with ■relatives in town. Mr. and Mrs. Garnet Smallacombe and children, of Guelph, are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reynolds will be sorry to learn that she is confined to her home through illness.—The holiday passed Quietly in Hensall. Gardening was in full ^wing. Quite a number went fish­ ing, while others spent the day Quiet­ ly entertaining friends.—-Miss Nora Follick spent Monday visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McLean at Kippen, —- Mr. Dan Beggs spent the week-end at his home in Toron­ to.—-A number from Hensall at­ tended the dance at Brucefield Tues­ day evening and all report a good time,—‘Mr. Orville Smith and Ray Patterson, who are in Seaforth hos­ pital, are recovering nicely from their operations.—The Easter servi­ ces in the United church on Sunday last were largely attended, the church being filled to capacity both morning and evening, Rev. Mr. Sinclair preached special Easter ser­ mons. At the morning service the choir rendered two anthems. Those taking special parts were Mrs. Alf. Clarke, Mrs, Joynt, Mrs. Drysdale and Miss Greta Lammie, Mr. W, O. Goodwin sang a solo in his usual manner. At the evening service the choir rendered two anthems and those taking special parts were Mrs. Lindenfield and Miss Greta Lammie. Miss Florence Welsh, of London, sang a solo that was greatly enjoyed by the congregation,—Miss Mary Buchanan, of Niagara Falls, is visit­ ing her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex. Buchanan.—Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, of Stratford, visited over the holi­ days with Mr. and Mrs, Geo. Brown. —The league meeting of the United church was’withdrawn this week.— Mr. and Mrs. Vermilyea, of Toronto visited with the latter’s mother, Mrs. J. B. Dinsdale,—Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Troyer, of Courtright and Mr. Jas. Troyer, of Toronto, visited over the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hudson..—Miss Hazel Coxwortli is spending the Easter holidays with her mother here.—Miss Emma Pfaff of London visited over the holidays with her brothers Messrs. John and Wm. Pfaff.—Miss Mary Stewart is spending the holidays at her home in Seaforth.—Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Davis, of Toronto, visited for a few days with his mother, Mrs. Wm. Davis and sister, Mrs. A.t W. E. Hemphill.—The Mission Band of the United church held a social evening in the basement of the church on Tuesday evening. The meeting was opened by singing a hymn after which Mildred Scruton read the scripture lesson. A solo by Cathryne Drysdale, reading -by Olive Brock, instrumental duet by Gladys Passmore and Olive Brock, instrumental by Mildred McDonell, reading by Marion McKay, instru­ mental by Olive Brock, Hymn no. 384 was sung after which all re­ peated the Lords Prayer. A dainty lunch of sandwiches, cake and ice cream was served at the close of the meeting.—The three local churches held special Easter services on Sun­ day last and the choirs rendered ex­ cellent music.—Miss Jessie John­ son is spending the Easter holidays at her home in Clifford.—Mr. and Mrs. L. McEwan visited over the week-end with Mrs. McEwan’s par­ ents at Paisley.—Messrs. Lee and Verne Hedden attended the funeral of their father in St Catherines on Thursday.—Mrs. Wm. R. Henry, of Brucefield visited friends in town on Monday.—Mrs. Andrew Dougall and Miss Rassie Dougall visited relativ­ es in Moncton on Sunday.—Wedding bells fire ringing again in Hensall.— Mr. and Mrs. Henry Phile spent the holiday visiting friends in Clinton. —Miss Beatrice Cudmore, of Toron­ to, visited over the week-end with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Roland Cudmore.—The concert which was given under the auspices of the Hen­ sall Bowling Club was fairly well attended in spite of the disagreeable evening. Rev. Mr. Naylor acted as chairman in his usual able manner and Rev. A. Sinclair spoke a few words encouraging the bowlers, showing how this recreation was so restful to the busy brain. M'r. Hess and Mr. Passmore rendered numer­ ous selections on tne violin and quitar, respectfully, readings were given by Mrs. Fleming, Mrs. Jas. Simpson and Miss Gladys Luker; selections were given on the violin by Misses G? Lammie and Miss E. Murdock; solos were given by Messrs S. Rannie, Houston and Sherritt; ladies’ quartette by Misses Drysdale, Goodwin, Lindenfield and Lammie. Miss Eleanor Fisher very ably acted as accompanist on the piano for the evening. All the num­ bers were exceedingly well render­ ed and all present enjoyed the en­ tertainment.—Mr. and Mrs. Milne Rannie, of Seaforth, visited with friends in town on Monday. THE .LATE GEO. HEDDEN The many friends of Mr. George Hedden were shocked to hear of his sudden and unexpected death which took place at St. Catherines on Tuesday morning. Mr. Hedden took sick a week ago and was taken to a hospital, where he was operated on, but regardless of the best medical skill be passed away on Tuesday morning. Mr. Hedden was a resident of Hensall for a num­ ber of years and a couple of years ago moved to Exeter and from there to St. Catherines, where they have resided for a year. Mr. Hed­ den leaves to mourn his loss his bereaved widow, eleven children and four brothers, Russell and Alonzo at Exeter; Tom., Brantford -and Samuel at Crediton; two sisters also survive Mrs. Rissett, at Brantford and one sister in the West. The funeral took place from his late residence at St. Catherines on Thurs­ day, interment in Mount Pleasant cemetery, DEA.TH OF DONALD GRASSICK Hensall is again called on to mourn the loss of one of its oldest and best known citizens in the per­ son of Donald Grassick, who passed away at his home here on Thursday morning last, aged 85 years. Mr. Grassick was born in Scotland and for years farmed on the second con- of Stanley. About 20 years ago his son James took over the farm and Mr. and Mrs. Grassick moved to Hensall and have resided here since. Mr. Grassick took a great interest in sports, especially bowling and his was a well-known figure on our lo­ cal green, He was an unusually well-informed man and kept him­ self well posted on current events. He was a member of the Presby­ terian church and a Liberal in poli­ tic. Besides his sorrowing widow he leaves to mourn his loss two sons aud two daughters, James who was on the homestead in Stanley for a good many years, but who sold out last year and moved-to Exeter, and Charles who is teaching school in New Ontario, and with his wife at­ tended the funeral. The daughters are Mrs. Geo. Walker, of Tucker­ smith Township, and Mrs. David Ferguson, of Toronto. The funer­ al was held from his late residence south Richmond street on Saturday afternoon and was followed to his last resting place in Baird’s ceme­ tery by a large number of old friends and neighbors especially from Stanley Township. Lecher, of Motherwell will have charge of the service at Thames Rd. church next Sunday.— Rev. G. M. and Mrs. Chidley and family 'motored to Toronto Thurs­ day. Mr. Chidley returned on Fri­ day for the Easter services. Mrs. Chidley and family remained for a week.—Mr. Tom Austin and Mr. D. Brown motored to Wheatley for the week-end.—The '-regular meeting of the Thames Road Women’s Mission­ ary Society was held at the home of the President, Mrs. Robt. Kydd, on Wednesday afternoon. April 6th with an attendance of 18 members. The meeting was opened in the usual way and the business part of the meeting dispensed with. It was decided to hold a sale of home­ made-cooking in the near future and a committee was appointed to make arrangements. The program consisted of a pleasing mandolin solo by Mrs. (Rev.) Chidley, a read­ ing by Miss Ethel Brown and the topic taken by Mrs. J. T. Allison, entitled “Thoughts on Calvary” was an inspiring Easter message. At the-.close of the meeting lunch was served by the hostess and commit­ tee in charge. The next, meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. F. Dawson. Millson spent a few days in Lucan on account of the illness of her little grandson Ralph, who is suffering from mastoids. The W.M.S. of Whalen United church held their regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Thos. Gunning on Thursday afternoon, April 14tli, There were 20 mem­ bers and 2 visitors present. Mrs. (Rev.) Irwin and Mrs. Albert Gunn­ ing led in prayer. Several interest­ ing leaflets were read. Mrs. Frank Squire contributed a solo in her us­ ual pleasing manner. A number of items of business were attended to. Mrs. Frank Gunning, president. Mrs. Ernest Foster and Miss Flor­ ence Pullen were appointed; dele­ gates to the Huron Presbyterial held in Goderich on April 28th. Bene­ diction by the president closed the meeting after which all enjoyed tea and a social time. CREDITON A play entitled “Crooks for a Mouth” will be given in the Town Hall, Creditor, on Monday evening, April 25 th, at 8 o’clock, by the Kirk­ ton Young People, tender the au­ spices of the Ladies Aid of the Credi­ ton United church.
