■a Surnames and Their Origin Ji- * Wheat's First Home. A strange experiment, which proves the. amazing vitality of ivhe^t* Jjas just been carried out. A quantity of “mummy”; <• wheat- that, i-\ , .yheat bdritd by tho ancient'Egyptians' w|th the embalmed body of a dead ,man, has'lwh sown by a?farmer of Bath-. urst, New South Wales. Although it Mjas over 4,000 years old, a crop has; been obtained. ’ , The crop was of seven-eared wheat of good quality, though not so suit- a'blo for milling purposes as modem; vrheat. It grew to an exceptional hei <ir}it. Wheat, older than this Egyptian “mummy” grain has, however, been found, and it is now definitely estab-i • Ijahed thltt it was one of the oldest cereals grown by early man. This is the result of a discovery made dur-* ing excavations of an ancient Su merian site near Kish. A •red-and-hlack jar was found in tho course of the researches, and in this was stored a quantity of charred wheat. That was last year, but nothing was said about the discovery at the time. Professor S, Langdon, who made it, wished to have the wheat examined by experts before he made any announcement. , Now, however, the experts have re ported and the find has been made public. According to one authority .it is rivet, or cone wheat, which is the most prolific of all the varieties; of the cereal. Other experts, how~j ever, say that it is common wheat; or! club wheat, as is often called, thej most highly developed of all the kinds and the finest for bread-making. | It is estimated Unit this sample of wheat dates hack to 3.500 B.C., so! that it is now roughly 5,500 years1 old. Its discovery is considered as; proving- that the original home of the' bread-making wheats was in Meso potamia. The historical botanists have long believed that this, was the case,! but they could advance no absolutely! definite proof until this find by Pro-; fessor Langdon.- Canada’s Share. It seems probable that before very long a woman may be able to dress herself aHmost entirely in thing® fas hioned from the skins of snakes. To boots, shoes, slippers', gloves and handbags fashioned from the colorful tanned hides' of serpents there have recently been added mannlsih cravats, scaa-f's and other dress accessories which are findting favor with many fashionable women. But in another winter a Paris manu facturer promisee to be supplying the market with sports coats and1 entire suits made of snake skins. These will, he says, be remarkabilo for their dura bility and will be so unusual in color and design that their w-earere will be sure to be the centre of attention wherever they go. The opportunity to make the serpent bear a large part of the burden of clothing womankind seems to be un limited, for its skins come -in atao®t infinite variety of weights and tex-1 lures as well as hues and patterns. For centuries diphtheria has taken its toll of lives and left countless thousands handicapped by its after effects. Thirty years ago this dread malady was yearly claiming 90 deaths for every 100,000 people in Ontario. “I j have seen too many little children choke to death, or fade out under the poisons of this terrible malady, to think calmly about the medical help lessness of that awful time,” says Dr. Royal 9. Copeland. In 1925 the death rate meant a loss- of 8 deaths per 100,- 000 of our population. And this in spite of the fact that the number of cases suffering from the disease was practically the seme for both years. How was it possible to save so many I lives? The answer lies In the fact ! that a specific cure—anti-toxin—was ! discovered in 1890 and the victims of - the disease In Ontario have, during the last few years, been given this treat ment early in the disease. Our parents have learned the wisdom of call-' ing the doctor at once if a child shows i symptoms of diphtheria.
