Middleton Folk
Hear About The
Modern Eskimo
A successful social evening was
held in SS 9 Goderich Township
on Friday evening, November 27,
under the auspices of the Wo-
rean's Association of St. James,
Clairch, Middleton, with a large
crowd present,
John Deeves, the rector's war-
den, acted as chairman for the
evening and called on Mrs. Milton
Steepe, the WA president, who
welcomed those present and in-troduced the speaker for the even-
ing, Miss Claire Taylor.
Miss Taylor was one of a party
of ten Canadians' who left Dorval
Airport in July 1958 for the East-ern Arctic, on a teaching and so-
cial service mission, sponsored by
the Canadian Council of Church,
es and the Department of North-
ern Affairs, Miss Taylor was
pledged to go for two months but
remained nearly one year.
Miss Taylor provided an even-
ing of rare entertainment, show-
ing beautiful colored slides taken
during this year at Frobisher Bay
on Baffin Island. The slides were
accompanied by a very interest-
ing and comprehensive commen-
tary. "At Frobisher Bay," Miss
Taylor stated, "the thermometer
falls to as low as 60 degrees be-
low but the air is dry and brac-
ing. The wind may reach a
velocity of 50 to 100 miles per
hour as there are no forests, etc.,
to break it. The frost permeates
to six to 12 inches below the
ground,
"It is hard to get close to the
Eskimos in a short period of
time," she seated, "one needs to
stay up there five years at least
to accomplish anything. The Es-
kimos have their own community
of thought and you have to know
the language to get anywhere
with •them. I exchanged a word
of English for a word of Eskimo.
Their language is derived from
the Cree language,"
"We tried to teach a basic pub-
lic health routine in their own
homes. There was never a whole
day of darkness as they were not
outside the Arctic circle."
A most noteworthy slide show-
ed a lighted igloo at night, glow-
ing like molten gold in the snow
as the light suffused the whole
igloo frota within, shining through
the translucent blocks of snow,
Some slides showed rugged ter-
rain and the effects of the glacier
age and rock formation, There
were slides of many beautiful
little lakes among the mountains
as thainage is almost nil. The
moss grows bright red on the
summer hilteide.
Most interesting too, were close
up pictures of the various Eskimo
classes of all ages. Miss Taylor
showed a picture of a class of
teen-age boys and left her aud-
ience with the challenging
thought, "what does the future
hold for them? Their way of life
is changed and mixed up with
civilization suddenly crowding in
on them."
During intermission, Miss Tay-
lor showed her versatility in sing-
ing 'very sweetly "The song that
reached my heart", accompanied
on the piano by Miss Mavis
Steepe. The two girls sang
'Walking in a Winter Wonder-
land". Later on Miss Taylor also
sang "A Little Dutch Boy and a
Little Dutch Girl."
Miss Taylor had several exhib-
its of Arctic craft on. display to
illustrate her talk, examples of
carving, also a sealskin rug and
warm Arctic clothes, etc,
On her return' from the Arctic,
Miss Taylor accompanied a mis-
sionary caravan out west, cover-
ing 2,000 miles in two months in
'Northern Saskatchewan, up to
'Carrot River.
She showed movies of this ex-
pedition, depicting their • church
and recreational activities, as well
as the new agricultural and ban-
bering developments in Northern
Canada.
John Deeves voiced the thanks
of all present to Miss Taylor for
a most delightful and educational
evening with pictures of rare
beauty.
