Clinton News-Record, 1959-07-09, Page 10We are now in the midst of the
holiday season with more cars than
ever before on our highways. Ac-
cidents are just that much more
likely to happen.
An interesting item came to my
desk this week. One well known
auto insurance company has been
giving extra medical payment ben-
efits to those who are total abst-
ainers. This company is now will-
ing to give double the extra cover-
age and again at no increase in
premium if you sign the total ab-
stainers form.
After two years of experience
the company has found that non-
drinking drivers have fewer accid-
ents and they are less serious ac-
cidents therefore more coverage
can be given at no extra cost.
We often complain about the
high cost of auto insurance but let
us remember it is the driver who
sets the rate. Have fewer and less
costly accidents and the Depart-
ment of Insurance will see to it
that the rates are reduced accord-
ingly.
At a meeting of farmers affect-
ed by the Hydro line to be built
from Seaforth to Clinton it was
agreed that there was a deprecia-
tion of re-sale value when a Hydro
line crosses a farm. For this rea-
son several refused to sign the con-
tract offered by Hydro.
Others stated that they had
signed because the representative
of Hydro stated that the Ontario
Federation had approved the am-
ounts offered and that the deprec-
iation re-sale value would come un-
der damages which would be set-
tled for after the line was built.
Beware of Fires
While On Vacation
Vacation time at summer camps
and cottages brings with it every
year the danger of forest fires
caused by careless people unfamil-
iar with the woods. The Ontario
Department of Lands and Forests
is appealing again to everyone to
help preserve the province's beaut-
iful recreation areas oy using
every precaution with fire.
The basic precautions against
forest fires are simple enough: A
,lighted cigarette or cigar tossed
flioughtlessly from a car window
'or on the ground While walking
in the woods can start ! a fire,, A
lunch fire left smouldering or not
quite out is another common fire.
hazard. Be sure camp and lunch
fires are dead out—soak with wat-
er, stir the ashes and , soak again
to be' doubly sure.
Be careful with fire. at all„times,
in the woods.

The Ontario Federation of .Agri-
crilture did approve the amounts
offered but only as a minimum and
only as a trial on the line to be
built from London to Sarnia. This
latter part was apparently forget-
ten by the representative.
The meeting decided that those
who had not signed would continue
to hold out and that those who had
signed should make a claim for
depreciation under damages, lilse
information on the reactions of the
farmers on London-Sarnia line
should be obtained.
This may seem to be of little
interest to many but I have heard
rumors of one water pipeline, a
gas line and another Hydro line
to be constructed shortly. One of
these may cross your property.
IturoWs Population
Stands. at 41,201.
According to the latest figures
from the office of the County As-
sessor A. Alexander, the paginat-
ion of Huron County is steadily
increasing. The present population,
(not including the air stations).
is 47,201, an increase or 181 over
last year's total of 47,020. The
largest factor in this rise is the'
town of Goderich which has a pop.
elation of 6,011, as compared to-
last year's total of 5,785.
The townships, however, showed
a decrease. Usborne Township, for
example, decreased 200 persons
and most other townships show-
ed a similar fall, Wingham was.
the only town to suffer a decrease,.
from 2,790 to 2,677, while towns,
such as Clinton rose slightly over

Safety was a word to Jim,
Aimed at others, not at him.
William, on the other hand,
Practised safety on his land.
Jim drove his tractor like a jet,
Certain he would not upset.
William drove his with great care-:.
Of its dangers—well aware.
Jim was always having falls
On broken ladders, pitchforks, walls.
Will was healthy, careful, wise
On safety he'd not compromise.
Jim left this world the sudden way
While btbwing up some stumps one clay.
Wise William's living out his days
Because he knows thcit.safety pays!
