"WHERE BETTER BULLS ARE USED"
It's all in the family perforinance records .of
our horned Hereford bull —
B. DOMINO P. T. 605M
who we purchased from Max A. Blau of Follett, Texas,
at the Pantech-tested Bull Sale at Panhandle, Texas,
one year ago. •
3.24 lbs. was his average daily gain on official test for
140 days and this was the highest of the 119 bulls on test in
1958. In addition to this he was one of a group of four paternal
brothers that were thehighest gaining group of sons of one
bull. He also 'graded Fancy the highest possible for conforma-
tion. His maternal brother was the sire of. the second highest
gaining group.
HISTORY REPEATS IN 1959
The sire of our B. Domino P. T. 605 M again had the
highest gaining group of sons on the same test and the highest
gaining individual gained 3.81 ibs. per day for 140 days. His dam
is a maternal sister to B. Domino P. T. 605 M. A half interest
in this 3/4 brother sold for $4,000.00 and graded Fancy. The
second highest priced bull sold for $3,500.00; this bull was sired
by the older maternal' brother to B. Domino P. T. The third
highest priced bull sold for $1,200.00 and the entire sale
averaged just under $600.00.
This is an example of the kind of bulls we liave avail-
able for service and the cost is very modest. All breeds. Your

To "start from scratch", you
should know that there are two
Methods of removing old varnish
and paint. One is by applying
force behind a sharp scraper or
sandpaper, by hand or with a
power sander. The other is by
using a liquid remover.
Suppose you want to change the
colour of a wood finish from light
to dark, or vise versa. If the
piece is made of flat surfaces,
without turnings, carvings or
moldings, then a sharp cabinet
scraper, kept sharp with a file,
will do this job cleanly, down to
the raw wood in a single stroke.
This method is more rapid than
using a solvent-type of remover,
but requires considerable exper-
ience with the tool,
The second way to get the sur-
faces cleaned-off is with a chemi-
cal. There are Several of these
removers available at hardware
stores which are non-inflammable,
odorless and soluble in water.
To use a chemical, the essential
equipment is a brush, a wide
rimless can, a three-inch scraper,
steel wool and a stiff scrubbing
brush. A brass wire brush such
as you use on suede shoes, will
be useful for small corners, as
well as a "pick" made of a six-
inch piece or 1/4 -inch. dowel, sharp-
ened at one end with a pencil
sharpener. (An ordinary wooden
meat skewer will -work fine),
Put on your rubber gloves, ap-
ply a heavy wet coat• of remover
to an area or not over two to four
square feet of flat surface, or a
couple of legs of a chair. '
Don't brush the remove'. as yon
would enamel, but daub it on from
a full brush and cover the sur-
face with as little brushing as
possible.
Wait 20 minutes, take the putty
knife or scraper and slide it from
you at an angle or about 45 de-
grees. The remover has done its
work if the scraper slides along
the surface of the Wood .easily
and removes the old finish which
should be soft as custard, You
will have to wait a little longer,
if this doesn't happen. If it is
sticky and dry-looking, put on an-
other coat, but should it still be
wet, give it, a little longer time.
As you lift off the old finish,
scrape it off your putty knife into
the tin can. Never dig or scrape
hard on the surface of the furni-
ture, but if necessary, apply a
second coat to areas that don't
clean off to the wood with the
first application. Two treatments
will he plenty to take off even
the most stubborn finish generally.
If not, you have been using the
wrong type or remover,
You will be glad of the rubber
gloves now, because next you take
the steel wool pad and twist it
into the moldings, or hollows in
the furniture to clean them out,
as well as the flat surfaces. Fol-
low immediately with a stiff brush
on these parts. Take the wooden
pick and wrap an old cloth around
it and clean out all the corners.
If you are using a water-solu-
able remover, dip the brush and
steel wool in water to soak off all
the softened finishing material.
Scrub the surface of the furni-
tUre using plenty of water to clean
it of all finishing material, Wipe
with a cloth and you are finished,
However, if the more common
type of solvent-base- remover is
being used, you must now use the'
steel wool with a solvent such as
Mineral spirits or gasoline, Rub
the surface down well with this,
Work Away From Fire
A further aid to a complete
cleaning job after using a solvent
and wax remover, is a scrubbing
brush and boiling hot water solu-
tion of the alkali floor cleaner
which you may obtain in all hard-
ware stores, This floor cleaner is
a remover in itself—though not of
the fastest or strongest type—and
it will remove the last traces of
material from the crevices of the
wood, as well as raising the grain
slightly, which help boost out the
last hard-to-get element of old
finish,
The thoroughness of the clean-
ing, will depend on ypur future
plans for the furniture. If it is
merely to be refinished in the
same, or a darker tone, it should
be allowed to dry thoroughly 16
to 24 hours — and then sanded
lightly with a fine-textured sand-
paper.
If, however, the old paint finish
is being removed or if the piece
is to be bleached to a lighter
tone, every bit of old material
must be removed. The water-
alkali floor cleaner should be ap-
plied with a brass wire brush or
sandpaper.
Filler can be removed from the
pores or coarse-textured woods,
such as oak,. ash, and walnut by
applications of the floor cleaner
or even a ,hot solution of lye or
caustic soda, brushing the grain
lengthwise with a fine wire brush.
If lye , or caustic soda is used,
rinse down the piece with a half-
and-half solution of ordinary cid-
er vihegar and water before dry-
ing.

th Weeds — Sp
'Don't Sow More
Maybe it's sounding a, new note
to suggest that killing .or control-
ling weeds can be unprofitable.
Nevertheless, the time has arrived
when we can no longer afford to
kill weeds just for the satisfac-
tion of it. We must control them
for a specific desirable result, and,
in the main, that result must be
bigger .and better crops, says the
Field Crops Branch of the Ontar-
io Department of Agriculture.
Otherwise, the weed control be-
comes an unprofitable expense.
The main reason weeds cause
reduced crop returns is the com-
petition they give the crop for sp-
ace, sunlight, moisture, and plant
nutrients, The effect of this com-
petition is greatest when crop
plants are small. In the crops of
wheat, oats, and barley, competi-
tion occurs when the crop plants
are in the four-to-six-leaf stage.
Therefore, to be most profitable,
weed populations should be elimin-
ated at that time. In the case of
corn, the damage caused by weeds
is most pronounced at tasseling

This illustrates particularly th
importance of eliminating Weed
before they've done the darilag
to the crop they're sharing th..
field with. Primarily, control st
arts with weed-free seed, Weed
free seed is basic to clean farming
and without it all other forms of
weed control are wholly inade,
