THE AFFLUENT SOCIETY
(John Kenneth Galbraith)
A well known economist looks.
at "the affluent society" in which
he lives and considers how the
idea of economics have not been
modified sufficiently to change
with changing conditions. A good
book for those who like to get
their teeth into a solid subject.
ANATOMY OF A MURDER
(Robert Traver)
According to some reports this
is one of the best of the current
crop of thrillers.
GOOD FENCES MAKE -0000.
NEIGHBOURS
(Joseph Barber) ' 44,
Current events of recent years
have shown that Canadian-Ameri-
can relations, though highly boast-
ed about for many years, strain at
the seams occasionally. To search
more deeply for a truer under-
standing of the ties between the
two countries, Joseph Barber spent
some time travelling across Can-
ada.
VARXEO .OrgRATIONS
(The Ron, Herbert A. Bruce, M.D.)
This is an autobiography of a
life that spans the years from
1868 to the present, a life time
filled to the brim with noteworthy
achievement in two exacting fields
of endeavor, medicine and public
life, *
THE SHY PRINCESS
(David Duff)
This is the story of Princess
Beatrice, the youngest daughter of
Queen Victoria. Readers of Royal
biographies will need no extra en,
clucement to read this account .of
the latter part of the Victorian
era. It is well-written and clear
in the presentation of facts and
receives a star for the brevity of
the footnotes.

FREEDOM WEARS A CROWN
(John Farthing)
A scholarly enquiry into the true
meaning of the Canadian constitu-
tion, John Farthing sums up the
definition of freedom in these
words---"Freedom, like many other
things -which make life more than
existence, is not the product of
Canadian geography but directly
the fruit of Canadian history and
tradition". • * *

op's Mantle", "The Rolling Years",
"The Gown of Glory" and others,
will be interested to have a glim-
pse into the personal life of these
well-loved books.
THE NORTHERN LIGHT
(A. J. Cronin)
A remarkably good story from
an author who has not turned out
a poor book. Henry Page, the
fourth in his family, to publish
"The Northern Light" is confront-
ecl by a new type of competition.
Page believes that the duty of a
newspaper is to present the news
and views of a community and not
the scandal. He meets the. intrU-
sion with his usual quiet determin..
.ation.
SOUTH AY JAVA BEAD
