The fact that we will not have
time, right at the moment, to fin-
ish reading this book, is further
proof that a friend was right in
her description of a librarian. The
conversation soon got around to
reading, as it inevitably does in
our case, and your librarian obser-

and her friend remarked that "be-,
lug a librarian must be like a
mouse in a cheese factory", Our
natural curiosity and our need to
know the contents mean that we
like to do a little more than •peek
between the covers. We had plan-
ned to give "Dr. Zhivago" the on-
ce-over-lightly treatment at a later
date, when there are not so Many
deadlines to meet. Since we have
not time to read the whole book
this is not a proper review. The
reader must deeide at the begin-
ning not to anew the confusion
of Russian names, and we might
add the profusion of nicknames,
stop us from enjoying this great
novel of Mission life. The stpry
begins early in the present cent-
ury and is a graphic account of
life in Russia, As the plot unfolds
it• is revealed that most of the
people were not very well inform-
ed concerning the change from
the Tsarist regime to the Com-
munist way of life, a change that
would have such a profound and
Often tragic effect on their lives.
Taking into account the obstacl-
es of unfamiliar names of people
and places, the occasional stilted
bit of translation, the result of
lack of time for revision, it is cer-
tain that you will feel that "Dr.
Zhivago" will remain one of the
best novels of our time. One of the
first readers commented that it
made "By Love Possessed" .a best
seller recently, look like a dime
novel.

MARINO THE MOST
OF YOUR BEST
(David A. MacLennan)
The author of this book is
known to many Canadians. He
is senior minister of the Brick
Presbyterian Church, Rochester,
N.Y. At one time he was the min-
ister of Timothy Eaton Memorial
Church, Toronto. you are feeling
low, out of sorts;i,,011yestless, it is
recommended that you read this
little book. In each short chapter
you will find ideas to stimulate
your lagging faith, thoughts to in-
spire you into "making the most
be enjoyed. It will be a piece of
good writing, with an interesting
plot, either conventional or on the
fantastic side. The characters are
strong and colourful not puppets
that move in a mechanical way
through the various episodes of
the story. Since he moved to Aus-
tralia nine years ago, Shute's have
had their setting in the continent
"down under", He is an aeronaut-
ical engineer by profession and
some of his best stories are about
pilots and their aircraft, and his
latest novel "The Rainbow and
the Rose" is in that category.
Johnny Pascoe, retired airline pil-
ot, owns and operates a small fly-
ing school in Tasmania. He is ser-
iously injured when he crash lands
his plane in a lonely corner of the
west coast of Tasmania, while on
a rescue mission -to bring a child
to hospital, There is Ronnie Clarke,
a former student-pilot, who tries
desperately to fly a doctor in to
the injured man. The romantic in-
terest is supplied by Brenda Mar-
shall, who also learns to fly during
the same period as Clarke. Added
to these is Peggy Dawson a
nurse, who insists on going to the
aid of Johnny Pascoe. The form
of the story is unusual but that is
expected of Nevil Shute, It will
certainly hold your interest to the
last page.
