CDCI Basketballers

Yesterday afternoon at the local
Collegiate gymnasium, CDCI boys
basketball teams split a double-
header with Seaforth. The Juniors
continued their winning ways by
beating Seaforth Juniors 38 to 22;
while the Seniors lost a close one
to Seaforth by 46 to ,44.
Junior Game
Ron Livermore again lead the
Juniors with 25 points; other scor-
ers were Roger Cummings, 6; Paul
Pickett, Allan Cochrane and Larry
Harper with two, and Ted Turn-
er got one point.

13, Ross 4, Pethick 3 and Storey 2.
Senior Game
Clinton scorers were Clayton
Groves 13, Ken Cummings 11,
Michael Mickalskii0, Paul Schgen-
hals 6, and David Alexander and
Tom Logan two each.
Seaforth was led by' Bob Reith
With 16 points; James 11, Hender-
sen 10, Bryans 4, James 2, Dennis
2 and Flewitt 1.
"The trucking game will have
to mend its ways," commented
Magistrate D. E. Holmes here on
Tuesday, as he brought down two
convictions against Irwin Prouse
of Mount Elgin,,under Ontario De-
partment of Transport regulations.
One fines was $50 and costs for
operating a vehicle without a PCP
licence. The other was for $20
for carrying an excessive load on
a tractor trailer transport.
Mr. Holmes warned Prouse that
John Hanna Reports
From Toronto
Once again the Ontario Legis-
lature has resumed its formal du-
ties ,,Its the Legislative Authority
of Ontario. On Tuesday, January
27, His honour Lieutenant-Gov-
ernor J. Keiller MacKay officiated
amidst the usual ceremony at the
opening of the fifth session of the
25th Legislature.
Of the 98 House members, 84
are Progressive Conservative sup-
porters of Premier Frost's Gov-
ernment, 11 back up Liberal Op-
position Leader Wintermeyer and
there are three CCF members.
During the past year there have
been six by-elections and in every
case a Conservative member has
been returned to the House.
Since the last session there have
been extensive changes in cabinet
personnel. Following the natural
gas enquiry, two ministers resign-
ed and three back benchers were
appointed ministers of the Crown.
At the end of 1958, the dean of the
Conservative party and former
premier and minister of agricul-
ture Col. Thomas L. Kennedy, an-
nounced his retirement from poli-
tics. This was followed shortly
thereafter by the resignation from
Cabinet of the Honourable George
H Dunbar, who for many decades
has been a good friend of all the
people of. Ontario. While the de-
parting of these senior and ex-
perienced members of the govern-
ment is a serious loss to the gov-
ernment, Premier Frost, by his re-
cent appointments of younger and
active men to his Cabinet, has
built up what is acknowledged to
be a very effective and powerful
team.
It is anticipated that the ses-
sion will be a long ohe with con-
siderable legislation to be enact-
ed and a very determined „effort
by the opposition to make or find
issues for the general election
which every one anticiates in 1959.
-John W. Hanna, M,P.P,
if he continued to operate his
trucks without proper licenses, he
could expect to have penalties "go
the limits' in the case of future
convictions. ,
Prouse 'has a record of 15 con-
victions under the act, including
the two in Clinton Court on Tues-
day. Magistrate Holmes comment-
ed that at least one other con-
viction which he had made was not
included On the. record as pre-
sented.
Evidence was heard from P. J.
Kirwirx, RR 2, Mount Elgin, dri-
ver of the vehicle; A. G. Lackie,
Kitchener, inspector for the West-
ern Ontario Division of the De-
partment of Transport and In-
spectors J. R. Jackson, Chatham
and E. Stevens, Orillia.
Prouse was defended by J. C.
McBride, Ingersoll, while Crown
Attorney Glenn Hays, Goderich,
prosecuted.
Since the weigh scales installed
by the provincial government near
Holmesville have, been in opera-
tion, inspectors have been on duty
at various periods of the day.
When the scales are open, all com-
mercial vehicles must' pass over
them. Violations of weight res-
trictions are noted at that time,
and charges may be laid by the
department.
The Prouse vehicle was trans-
porting 22 tons of grain from the
elevators in Goderich, Evidence
showed that at the Holmesville
scale gross weight was 71,500 lbs,,
plus an allowance of 400 lbs. for
accumulated snow, ice and sand on
the undercarriage of the truck.
Permissable weight for the ve-
hicle as provided for by licenses
is 68,000 lbs., resulting in an over-
weight of 3,500 lbs. Specified
weight for the vehicle was 24,300
pounds (tractor and trailer com-
bined), This, plus the 22 tons of
grain would have been over the
perinissable weight, by about 300
lbs. However the government seal-
es weighed the equipment and
load at 3,200 pounds more than
that.
Explanation given by defence
was that the accumulated snow
and ,ice was a good deal more than
400 pounds. The crown suggested
that the increase was due to in-
creased equipment added to the
truck, such at Saddle tanks, gaso-
line, weight of driver, augur, etc,
There are three weigh scales
in Inspector LaCkie's department,
