S 40 YEARS AGO Clinton NewS-Record (Thursday,. December 12, 1918) W. A. Ross, Idaho, a former Clinton citizen has shown his pat- riotic spirit in a very practical way, by knitting 35 soldiers' sweaters for the American Red. Cross. Mr. Ross is a brother-in- law of Mrs, T. Mason of town and Mrs. C. B, Smith, Seaforth, and will be remembered by many peop- le here. At a special meeting of the council of Goderich Township, a by-law was passed and will be submitted to the people to be vot- ed on at the coming election mak- ing the term of reeve and council- lors two years instead of one. This looks like a move in the right direction. There seems to be small need of the turmoil of a municipal election every year and a council elected for two years would have time to work out some of its plans instead of having to leave them for a new council to deal with. If Goderich Township passes this by-law its working out will be watched with interest by other municipalities. Major W. D. McTaggart was up from London last 'week for several days. 40 YEARS AGO tard is pastor, -Lieutenant William Bari O'Neil, son of W. T, and Mrs, O'Neil, Clinton, has won high honours on. the battlefield, and has been a- warded the Military Cross for dis- tinguished bravery. Lieut, O'Neil went overseas with the 161st Hur-r- ons and Is now with the fourth Canadian division. His family' ex- peas that he is now at or near the German border with the Can- adian troops, 25 YEARS AGO Clinton News,Record (Thursday, December 14, 1933) A large crowd greeted the Kill tie Band at their first benefit con- cert in the town hall on Sunday evening, under the leadership of Bandmaster Morgan Agnew, and many comments of praise were heard concerning the excellent program given. In addition to the several numbers given by the band and individual members of it, Mrs, W. A. Oakes contributed two char- ming vocal solos, "The Star of Bethlehem" and "0 Divine Red- eemer" which were very much ap- preciated. The House of Refuge Committee (Robert Smith, chairman) report- ed at County Council meeting that a stoker has been installed at a cost of $750 which is proving sat- isfactory. On 51 tons a saving of $350 was realized. The Home was reported in perfect 'condition. J. M. Roberts, Goderich, was ap- pointed clerk and A. H. Erskine, Blyth, was named treasurer of the County of Huron to fill vacancies resulting from the recent investi- gation into the county's financial affairs. Both men have enviable overseas records, They were chos- en from 110 applicants. 10 YEARS AGO Clinton News-Record (Thursday, December 9, 1948) Some people are born under a lucky star, and Art Groves, Clin- ceived the sum of $204.79 last week as his share of the prize money in the draw conducted by Quebec Unit No. 33, Army, Navy, and Air Force Veterans in Canada for a $400,000 fund.
