Dr. Mary Rutnam has received
the Ramon IVIagsaysay Award for
public service, This award, which
is the Asian equivalent of the No
bel prize, has never before been
made to a woman, and only five
men have received it,
Dr. Rutnam is the former Mary
Irwin, native of Clinton, and her
father operated a grpcery store on
the corner now occupied by Pick-
ett and Campbell Ltd. men's wear
store, She joined the American
Medical Mission at Jaffna in Cey-
lon in 1896, marrying a Tamil
Ceylonese and making her home
in Ceylon, Some of her five child-
ren have been educated in Toron-
to.
This award was founded in me-
mory of Ramon Magsaysay, presi-
dent of the Phillippines, who died
in a plane crash in 1957, It is pre-
sented to persons in Asia "for ex-
emplifying the highest type of de-
mocratic leadership".
Word of the award has reached
us officially through Mrs. George
Wilson, St. Marys, who is the Pu-
blic Relations Officer for the Fed-
erated Women's Institute of Can-
ada. Dr. Rutnam practised medi-
cine in Colombo and became Cey-
lon's first woman municipal coun-
cilor. Her desire to assist the rur-
al women led to the organization
in 1930 of the Ceylon equivalent
of the Women's Institute, known
as Lanka Mahili Samiti. Now 28
years later, they are island-wide,
with a membership of 75,000.
Working with the women of
Ceylon, Dr. Rutnam inspired them
to adopt better methods of home-
making, hygiene, nutrition, child
care, gardening and crafts. She
also encouraged them to take part
in public affairs.
At the world conference in Col-
ombo, of the Associated Country
Women of the World, Dr. Rutnam
presided for the Ceylon Day pro-
gram. Delegates will long remem-
ber the dignity and charm with
which she accomplished this task.
Recalling the conference, which
she attended as a Western Ontario
delegate; Mrs, George Wilson, St,
Marys.,. comments, "It must have
given Dr, Rutnam tremendous sat-
sfaction to see those rural women
taking part in that program. We
rejoice that her efforts in the
field of citizenship have been re-
Warded within her lifetime."
Mrs. Wilson talked .with Dr.
Rutnam at the conference, and
recalls that she spoke of her early
life here in Clinton, and of the
early struggles they had in Cey-
lon to establish training centres,
Dr, Rutnern is now 85 years old,
but this did not stop her from
journeying to Manila, where the
Ramon Magsaysay Award was
presented.
Unlikely To Shoot
Rat ..Deer; They
Would Outrun Fox
What's the possibility that deer
shot this fall may have rabjes?
Deer, as well as other mam-
mals, can contact rabies, but the
possibility of shooting a rabid deer
is remote, Dominion health of
animals branch officials at Hull,
who check suspected specimens for
the disease, report their list show
no confirmed rabies cases in deer
for the whole of Canada. This,
they say, is not surprising, since

GODERICH, ONT.
Some people have a flair for giving. They have a talent and taste
for choosing the most exciting Christmas presents. They give the
good things that make living more pleasurable. Many of these
people will give modern electric appliances this Christmas— and
they'll insist on having them ready for use on Christmas day,
because they know these appliances will make Christmas (and
every day for that matter) a new and exciting experience.
So, this year, do a little hinting. Just say you'd like something
wonderful for the household something the whole family can
enjoy. And don't be surprised if you get a superb, modern automatic
electric appliance to help you "live better electrically"—the safe,
clean, modern way.
