At the present time, Pont animals suspected of being, exposed to rabies are quar- antined under this act, but for some reason or other if an animal 'dies the farmer must stand the loss. As hundreds of farm 44. imals, are involved this creates an unnecessary hardship for some farmers, . By agreeing to share the ex- parise of fox bounty with inuri- icipalitiea, the Ontario government has shown good faith. We now, look to the federal government to do likewise, Mr, Hill: concluded. • . • e • •• Year-Old Calf Has _ . Narrow Escape _ ,FrOm 40-Foot Well (By our .fleusall Vorrespolident) A one year old calf was found Nov, 2 standing in two 'feet of water at the bottom of a 40-foot. well by district farmers. They es- timated the animal had been wed- ged in the well for three days. Owned by - Harry Smith, who lives one mile south of liensal), the calf disappeared four days ago. The WelL is located on the prop, erty of a neighbohr-farrn owned by Roy Bell. Farmers organized a posse to search for the calf and found tracks leading to a bushland. How- ever during an extensive hunt on Saturday, searchers heard a noise in the well and found the animal lodged .at the Vottom. The animal was hauled from the well by a tractor. The veterinar- ian who attended the calf said it was suffering, from shock. During the search in the bush for the animal the men came ac- ross a wild bobcat.. 0 It its estlimated that in 1958 the total' capita outlay by hugitteess nod indusrcy in Capiadia wiAch is the job-crreatitng form of call:Maki dovestment---will be about 13 per- cant below the 1957 lever`. Zone six, of the Ontario Cream Producers held their directors meeting on November 6 in •Clin- ton. The main topic .of discussion was the increasing stocks of Powder and butter, TWP Years ago, opless a definite change in production occurred, Canada was moving steadily into a serious shortage of both these products. The change took place and now we are faced with over- production. When we were., heading to a shortage the floor price for butter- fat was 58 cents. The •Qovernment. in 1957, permitted the. addition of storage costs to the re-sale price of butter. This increased the price of butter-fat to 62 to 63 cents. Skim-powder, in previous times, dropped aa low as 11 cents and at others rose to 13 or 10 cents. The support price was set at 17 cents while the Dairy Farmers of Can- ada asked for 16 cents and one farm organization demanded 21 cents. Along with this, Beef Producers took a severe beating in the early fall of 1957. This influenced many farmers to turn to dairying. We know that while there has been an increase it dairy herds most of the increase in • production has thaw from the increased use' of concentrates since the price of powder and butter warrePted- this more industry,w expensive Panser. In stocks _appear, the laboor forc4 is laid off and-production can wait for con- Sureption, to catch up. It's rather difficult to convince a good coo to stop production, and not advisable because food scarcities can be too dangerous. The zone meeting drafted a res- olution which • it ' hopes Will 'give the farmer a fair 'return, will re- duce the stocks of butter and pow- der and provide the consumer with an excellent food at a price he can pay: " "Whereas there are large stocks of butter being built up and where- as unemployment is seriously af- fecting butter consumption; There- federation Fieldman.
