Wildlife Biologist Lloyd Stock,
back from a pheasant survey of
Pelee Island for the Ontario Dep-
artment of Lands and Forests,
says fall hunting prospects are
encouraging,
"Reports from across the' en-
tire district indicate that this is
a banner 'year for pheasants," he
says, "The hatch and survival
up to the end of July have been a-
bove average, and birds have been
seen in areas where they have
;been absent for the past few years.
"If the mortality rate .heinains
normal for the balance of the
growing, season, birds will be rela-
tively plentiful and the hunter will
have a good chance of filling his
bag this fall,
"On Pelee Island, the July sur-
vey just completed revealed that
the pheasants there have increased
substantially in numbers; the av-
erage brood size at present is 7.5
clAcks,
"The season on Pelee has been
set for Wednesday and Thursday,
October 29 and 30, The bag limit
—nine cocks and two hens.
'The season thus far on Pelee
'has been as good if not better
than on the mainland. The water
supply on the island has not been
a 'limiting factor which may have
been the case elsewhere in, south-
western Ontario during the un-
usually dry spring and early sum-
mer.
