The figure for, the previous year was $467,- 188,000. Net profit was $4,972,803 as against $4,507,000 for' 1957, an increase of 10.3 per cent., The net profit was equivalent to' 1,03 per cent on dollar sales; about the same as in recent years. For each dollar of sales of live stock products the company paid 78.01 cents to producers and re- tained only .54 cents as net profit. This is only about one-seventh of a cent per pound on live animals, or one-fifth of a cent per' pound on the weight sold to the' con- sumer. For the first time in its annual report, the company gives a partial list of the other pro- ducts it handles and which con- tributes substantially to its earn ings. These range from leather and pharmaceuticals to dairy pro.- clucts, shortenings, and foam rub- ber. The report emphasizes the great increase in our exports of beef to the United States. This strong de- mand allowed sharply increased' marketings of Canadian cattle to be made at strong prices. Most of the exports were in the form of live cattle. Canadian slaughter- ings increased only moderately. Recent declines in Canadian hog production have been reversed and the current year's production is showing lively increases. The rapid increases in the production of poultry meat on a large scale, and at reasonable costs, continues and the company is sharing in this important development.
