Electric Mountain Railroad.
Ono of the most' interesting achieve-
ments in modern engineering is the elec-
trio mountain railway recently opened
to the public at Burgenstook, near Lu-
cerne. The rails describe one grand
curve formed upon an angle of 112 de-
grees, and the system is such that the
journey is made as steadily and smoothly
as upon any of the straight furnicular
lines. The Burgenstook is almost per-
pendicular—from the shore of Lake Lu-
cerne to the Burgenstook is 1,330 feet,
and it is 2,860 feet above the level of the
sea. Tho total length of the line is 938
metres, and it commences with a gradi-
ent of 82 per cent., which is: increased to
48 per cent. after the first 400 metres,
this being maintained for the rest of the
journey. A single pair of rails is used
throughout, and the motive power (elec-
tricity) is generated by two dynamos,
each of twenty-five horse power, which
are worked by awaterwheel of nominal-
ly 125 horse power. erected upon the
river Aar at its mouth at Buochs, three
miles away, the electric current being
conducted by paeans of insulated copper
wires. The loss in transmission is esti-
mated at 25 per cent,—New York - Tele-
gram. -
Iron vs. Wooden sleepers.
A few years ago the German railway
companies were convinced that iron
sleepers were superior to wooden ones.
In 1885-86 there were laid on the German
lines 2.462,000 new woodenn, sleepers and
1,007,152 iron ones; but in the following
year there were only 868,263 iron sleepers
used, against 1,544,992 wooden ones.
Last year there were 2,677,424 wooder
Bleepers laid and only 750,670. iron ones
The use of wood for sleepers seems, there-
fore, to be gradually increasing -in Ger-
many and the employment of iron dimin-
ishing. The French railway companies'
have always opposed the use of iron
sleepers in France, but they make less
objection to them in Algeria, where the
extreme heat- makes their application
more profitable.—New York Telegram.

It has been estimated that we get a
complete new outfit of brains about
every two months. The duration of a
nerve's life is about sixty days. Each
nerve cell has its,own independent
functions, subordinte to the higher
functions of the whole brain "en
masse;' and the latter acts as a sort of
boss or overseer to the individual actions
and life of each separate cell. Every
cell is destroyed and renewed every two
months, so we each get six brand new
brains per year.—Medical World.

A Faller Explanation.
"Pa," plaintively pleaded petit Pierre,
popularly known as "Petey," the other
morning, "I really cannot go to school
today: I ache all over."
"Then you may stay at home," kindly
responded Petey's father, who, despite
his rough exterior, had a warm heart
beating in his breast. -
"So you lied to ale, you young rascal,"
fiercely exclaimed Petey's father when
he saw petit Pierre fishing in the creek.
"Don't hit so hard, pa," pleaded Petey
between the whacks: "it was this I was
aching for—to go fishing."—Albahy.Ex-
