Amid showers of confetti, Mr.
and Mrs. Milton Wiltse were sur-
prised and honoured on the oc-
casion of their 45th wedding an-
niversary Wednesday evening, Ju,
ne 4. A chicken dinner complete
with, 'anniversary cake was ser-
ved by their daughter at the home
of Mr. end Mrs, Ross
The occasion was also the birth-
day .of the couple's son-in-law,
Ross Merrill.
During the evening members of
the immediate family presented
their mother and 'father with a
camera and wished them many
more years of happiness together.
Mr. and Mrs. Wiltse were mar-
ried at n o'clock, June 4, 1913
on the lawn under an. arch of
honey suckle interwoven with
snowballs' at the home of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McMichael,
Barbara Inder Wins
District Finals In
Public Speaking
Miss Barbara Inder came through
with flying colours in the Legion-
sponsored public speaking contests
held here on Saturday. She won
the senior public school class in the
district finals. Next competition
will be the provincial finals some-
where near Toronto; date yet to be
announced.
Barbara's topic was "A Great
Canadian Leader-Dr. Marion Hil-
liard". She had managed to weave
humour with serious fact, quota-
tions with expression and a few
personal details about this fine wo-
man doctor into her talk, to pro-
duce the best in the class. Her ease
in delivery was no doubt a factor,
as well as her pleasant modulated
voice.
Other winners in the competi-
tion were the elementary class,
Grades 1 to 6, Nancy Armstrong,
Galt; junior high schools, grades
9 and 10, Betty Schauss, Water-
loo and Ron Rollo, Kitchener in
the senior high school class.
Thirteen contestants from Wat-
erloo, Galt, Kitchener, Wiarton,
Harriston, Listowel and Clinton,
were Winners of zone finals,
Chairman of the event was
James McDonald, Waterloo, assist-
ed by John O'Connor, Kitchener.
Arthur Leyburne, president of the
Clinton Branch spoke briefly.
Judges were John Gowman,
Goderich, public school inspector
in South Huron; Harold Smith, a
civil service employee from Kit-
chener and Mrs. Betty Harley,
English teacher at Mitchell.
Guests included Herman Young,
Mayor of Kincardine, and Bert
Paige, a past president of the
Kitchener Legion Branch.
Coaches of the winning candid-
ates were given a good deal of
credit by the judges and other of-
ficials. Mrs. 3. D. Thorndike,
teacher of English in the Clinton
Public School, and closely connect-
ed with the public speaking con-
test throughout this year and past
years, was coach of Clinton's win-
ning entry.
Tuckersmith Club Has
Twenty Attending
The Tuekersanith Ladies' Club
met at the home of Mrs, Chrletena
Brown, Seaforth, on Wednesday,
June 4 with 16 members and four
visitors present, Roll call' was
answered by "What I Would Like
To Do In My Spare Time". A
bus trip north to Midland was
planned for early July and also a
picnic in illayfield. Readings were
given by Mrs. M. Dale and Mrs.
H. Johns. A contest was conduct-
ed by Mrs, Ernie Crich, The re-
maining time was spent playing
bingo, Lunch' was served by group
one.

Church conducted the June meet-
ing, and Mrs. Mervyn Batkin had
charge of the devotional period.
Mrs. Grant Mills, Miss Elva
Wiltse, Mrs. R. Fear and Mrs.
Milton Wiltse presented the last
chapter of the study book, in a
most initeresting manner.
Mrs. E. Radford and Miss Wiltse
played a piano duet. The Mission
Band presented a short program.
Those taking part were Nancy
Olde, piano solo; Joan Mills, piano
solo; and the Band, a chorus.
A social hour was held for the
mothers and children of the Baby
Band and Mission Band.

Barker, ,paStor of the Methodist
Church, Seeforth performed -the
ceremony, For their honeymoon
they left on the afternoon train
from Seaforth for Detroit. Upon
their return they took up resi-
dence on 'the London Road, two
miles south of Clinton where they
farmed for 33 years before mov-
ing to their present address' on
Victoria Street in rrlinton,
Mr. and Mrs, Wiltse have two
daughters, Lois (Mrs. Cecil El-
liott) and Mildred (Mrs. Ross
Merrill) and five grandchildren;

five years.
Father Graham leaves On June
20 for the parish of Hesson, north
of Stratford, with Listowel as a
mission.

Clinton Holy Name Society was
chairman of the meeting. presen-
tations were made by Lawrence
Denomme on behalf of the Clinton
parish; by Mrs, .Arnold Dale, presi-
dent, in behalf of the Clinton Altar
Society; by Mrs. Joseph Blake of
the Clinton Catholic Women's Lea-
gue and by Bob Garon, Clinton
Young People; by John Phelan,
president of the Blyth Holy Name
Society on behalf of the Blyth
parishioners and by Mrs, Joseph
Kelly, of the Blyth Catholic Wo-
men's League. The children of
the catechism class presented
Father Graham with a Spiritual
Bouquet.
Harris Oakes, eldest son of Dr.
and Mrs. W. A. Oakes, and a medi-
cal student of University of Toron-
to has spent the past two weeks in
England at the start of a three
months stay overseas. He will tour
Switzerland, Austria, a part of
Germany and Italy, and then after
ten days in Paris, will go on to
Spain. Then he plans a tour of
rural England, Ireland and Scot-
land before coming back to Can-
ada to resume his studies in the
fall.
