4 and Some Wtelo* To* a `;:• cttho 'Num. Hied much pleasure iu beingpros• ant at a meeting held in the town ,Hall here on Tneadayakevening in honor of St. Patrick, Mae a autres ful meeting and was generally well managed. The event of the evening Was the grand address of Father Kealy, of .Drysdale.. He gave a good summary of Irish history from the time of O'Oonnel.'s agitation for the ar, Emancipation Bill, up to the present day, He sr ated that lie had never been in Ireland, but still he described scenes and places in that truly lovely land, of the ahamroalt and daisies, 7, with as much vividness and eloquence as if he had been"tn the maaor born." For a long, dreary night of linndreds of years • poor old Irelaud has been tyrannize.' over, oppressed and persecu ted as no country in the world ever had . been. Irishmen`' were sneered at, their., very tone of voice mocked by ignor- ant people, although it is well known that the -purest English ever used is spoken by Irishmen. It was said the Irish were incapable of ;managing their own affairs.—and this was said Y as if such men as Grattan, Flood and • Burke had never lived. Ireland has furnished some of the greatest intel- lects that ever adorned British Litera- ture, It is doubtful if Burke ever had an equal. In spite of all iN• usage and persecution Irishmen have nobly supported British principles in every country from the Indus to the pole—from the cloudy shores of New Fonndiand to the sunny scenes of Oaffre. And haat has been Ireland's reward ? Her patriots banished as outlaws and many sentenced to be hanged for pretended primes that were crimes in no other part of the world. What, student of Irish history gan.forget the brutal, infamous Nor- bury, and there are similar Norbury's in Ireland -today. 'Who, With any human feelings, can read the story of how noble Emmett was done to death without shedding bitter tears? Irish- . men can rule well iu their own' land, atind not only that, but they or' their descendant's rule today iti ue:irly ev©ry laud under the sun. They rule in ,, the United States, in New Zealand, c °F'4 in Australia and clid in Ontario— notably Dufferin and Hincks, Not a city or town in the United States, or even in Canada where: the fair, honor- able'and beneficial rule of Irishmen as not experienced to some extent. "Whom the God wish to destroy they first make mad." • The Tories of England are, turning the world egainet .. them by their savage treatment of the ,i people of Ireland. At this moment, I believe, eleven members of tho B1.rtish parliament are confined in Irish pris- ons for no crime but loving their country, The perseenting Balfour might have been a prominenC•nian but liis doings in Ireland *have • em phatically finished his carrier, Church - hill and Chamberlain are now beginn- ing to'see that their ouly, hope to save themselves from political extinction is to join the great Liberal British party, and help to give amp`e justice to Ireland. 'That, justice will be soon ;yen. After the long dreary perse- cution of centuries, the first streaks of dawn can be easily seen in the political horizon, and soonthe sun burst of old Ireland will shine forth with a brilliancy that will astonish the world. Then Great Britain will have Ireland as a true supporter and friend and need fear no power on earth. Every true Irishman must . and will have unbounded gratitude and love for the noble Scotch, Eng - lisle and Welsh democracy, who are no v so truly and generously, support- ing them in this their, greet hour of suffering and trial, The Irish are proverbially grateful and they will ever' have gratitude for their Scotch, Eng lisle and Welshfriends And :as for J'th'e grand 'old nian" he deserves to be the second patron saint of, Ireland, next after St Patrick. , I am sure that gerieratione of Irishmen yet unt born will be yearly celebrating bie memory. I hope and believe he shall live to give poor Ireland a full meas- ure of `Home Rule, and then we shall see that superbly beautiful county 'Great, glerioue, happy and free, "Vicat bower of the earth, and first gem of the sea. 1 am, Yours, etc.. 11 ' '.,Ei.S' ' 3. :ILr C A 7 ,[:,'tel ?iC:.)
