Startling evidence of the role liqu- or plays in traffic accidents is furnished by their records. After 14 years in business they had to pay in losses per vehicle 36 percent less than 'the average of 30 other companies. And the number of claims per 100 vehicles 'was 37 percent less. Since by no means all of the policy holders iin these other companies were drink- ing drivers, --alcohol had to play a tremendous; role to create the difference between 'the two gr-, oups How does alcohol do that? 1. It -slows down reactions. 2. It creates false confidence 3. It iinPairs concentration and dulls! judgment. 4. It affects vision. The doctor's.report emphasized ,particularly the untidiness of the ehop, and the fact that meats were not kept under regrigeration at all times. There was deterior- ating meats in the walk-in cooler. Some of the working areas where meat was sliced' were not kept clean, and the chopping block was cracked to such a degree that it would' !be impossible' to keep it 'cleaned satisfactorily. Mr. Fitzsimmons contended the Doctor was . making "mountains but of molehills". He said he 'had been in the business for ten years and had' handled meat for 26 years. "My customers," said 'Mr. Fitzsimmons, "wonder what the Doctor is complaining about. They see nothing wrong, 'and they never bring meat back.. If they were, or if I'd poisoned anybody, it would be different."
