Startling Evidence
. Motorforarna, a Swedish Insur-
ance Company, writes "traffic in-
eurance" solely for abstainers.
Startling evidence of the role liqu-
or plays in traffic accidents is
furnished by their records.
After 14 years in business they
had to pay in losses per vehicle
36 percent less than 'the average
of 30 other companies. And the
number of claims per 100 vehicles
'was 37 percent less. Since by no
means all of the policy holders iin
these other companies were drink-
ing drivers, --alcohol had to play
a tremendous; role to create the
difference between 'the two gr-,
oups
How does alcohol do that?
1. It -slows down reactions.
2. It creates false confidence
3. It iinPairs concentration
and dulls! judgment.
4. It affects vision.

the boy driver,
Every passenger in a car has'
a responsibility towards 'the .driar-
er, 'and all other road users'. A
responsibility to see that his own
behaviour does !not contribute to
'unnecessary distraction, or ten-
sion. And to use quiet influence
to discourage and attitude or be-
haviour of the driver, or other
paseengers, that could contribute
or develop into a hazard.
The responsibility weighs heav-
ily on an attractive gat out in a
car with. an impressionable 'boy.

The doctor's.report emphasized
,particularly the untidiness of the
ehop, and the fact that meats
were not kept under regrigeration
at all times. There was deterior-
ating meats in the walk-in cooler.
Some of the working areas where
meat was sliced' were not kept
clean, and the chopping block
was cracked to such a degree
that it would' !be impossible' to
keep it 'cleaned satisfactorily.
Mr. Fitzsimmons contended the
Doctor was . making "mountains
but of molehills". He said he 'had
been in the business for ten years
and had' handled meat for 26
years. "My customers," said 'Mr.
Fitzsimmons, "wonder what the
Doctor is complaining about. They
see nothing wrong, 'and they never
bring meat back.. If they were,
or if I'd poisoned anybody, it
would be different."
The magistrate told: 'him "that's
what we're trying to avoid," and
waned him, that though he. paid
the fine, the matter could begin
all over again. If no further in-
spectibns the shop -is still not
considered satisfactory, he could
be charged again.
. Careless Driving
A ,.young man, Leonard Hicks,
18, pleaded guilty to careless driv-
ing on April 8, and was fined $20
and costs. Richard Roorda, 17,
also pleaded guilty to careless
driving, which resulted in an ac-
cident at Clinton's! main intersec-
tion on March 23, and was fined-$25 and costs.
