Cochrane Their Candidate (continued from page one) was quoting probable expendi- tures . . that I had in my book last January." 'Says Program Continued The public works, Mr. Harris said, were supposed to reduce un- employment but "the Tory Govern- ment has done nothing more than continue a program we started three years ago." The solution to the problem, as Mr. Harris saw it, was to let in- vestors--,both Canadian and for- eign—know that they would 'have a chance to make money through investments in Canadian develop- ment. This the Liberals would do, he said, but the Conservatives had built "an atmosphere of confus- ion." "Let the Liberals back in," he promised "and 'employment will improve within two weeks." Mr. Harris blasted the Conser- vative Government for not pro- ducing an accounting .of its fin- ances, charged that their trade policies were taking farmers away from the best-paying markets and praised the Liberals' choice of a party leader "because Mike Pear- son is the man who can best bring peace to Canadians." ,Cites Index Drops "I said last March that 1957 would be the best year yet," he recalled. "I also said the gross national product would be about $31,250,000. Bitt'.1 hadn't taken into account that we might have a Conservative government. "Ever since August, every index has been down," he said. "But then, trade has always declined under a Conservative govern- ment.
