The second is a diglot publicat-

The third is for completion of

Progress is a wonderful thing,
The huge strides of science leave
one gasping, Those of us who have
lived a few years have to stop
and shake ourselves once in .a
while as we survey the prodigious
surge' of, man's knoWledge.
Take medicine, for example, In
World War I, if a soldier got a
"blightly", just enough of a wound
to put him, out of action, back he
went to England, happy as a pig
in the proverbial. In World War
II, unless he was shot to ribbons,
they filled him with blood plasina
and penicillin, and before he could
say: "I tell you I'm a dying man,"
he was back with his unit in the
front lines.
*
Or take my sore back. I've had
a sore back for about three mon-
ths. Now, if my grandfather had
had a sore back, hed have got my
grandmother to rub liniment on it
and wrap it in flannel. If my fath-
er had had a sore back, he'd have
dropped in to see the 'family doc-
tor, swapped curling stories, may-
be had a snort of cordial with
him, and gone home with some
pills., quite happy. *
Not me. Not in this scientific
common as cowboy singers, I have
age, 'when slipped discs are as
to, go to a specialist. A back 'spec-
ialist, That's what the Battle-
Axe said, I went, and I learned
with awe of the vast advances
in medical science since Grandma
was rubbing the Dr. Sloan's on
Grandpa's back.

Nice young fellow, he was.. As-
ked me a lot of questions, like
did I have many sore throats.
Hit me on theknees 'with a lit-
tle hammer, LOoked in the ears,
Measured my legs, like •I needed
a new suit, maybe. Listened to'
the heart with that cold thing„
Stuck pins in me all over and
asked if I could feel them. Very
impressive,

Finally he got around to the
back, "Does that hurt?" he asks,
pushing his finger so fat. into my
back I thought it would come out
the 'front, Apparently my howl of
anguish satisfied him. He stood
back and nodded in a satisfied.

Then he donned his rubber Ow-

agination, Suffice it to say that
he 'wound up wiggling my tail-

to make sure, I was getting pretty
worried. When he said a blood
test would be a good idea, too, I
was near panic, but gamely. a-
greed,
So I went to• -the hospital, don-
ned' a butcher's coat over my shiv-
ering nakedness and was snapped
from all angles._ .Then a callous
young woman with a cold in her
nose sucked a pint or two of blood
out of my arm. I didn't, mind her
apparent enjoyment of he oMeal,
but was a- bit annoyed by' her
scornful laughter just before I
keeled off the stool, in a faint. * - 2
Three days later I got the* bill
from the hospital. X-rays $28.00
Blood, $3.00. Then. I went back
for my interview with the back
specialist I was braced for the
worst:, cancer, tertiary arthritis,
a warped spine. He greeted me
gravely. I grew , pale. He pulled'
out the X-rays, took a look, and
shook his head. • * * 2 '
"Everything confirms my clinic-
al `observations," he told. me. My
heart plummeted into. the region
of the duodenal ulcer. "There is
no indication of any bone, musc-
ular or infectious disorder," he
continued. "Everything points to
the fact that there is a chronic
irritation in the lumbar region." * *
"What does that mean Doctor?"
I ,quavered. "Well", he smiled
biaghtly, "the layman might say
you have a sore heck, but I should
hesitate to put it quite so simply." *
It took a few minutes for that

"A GOOD DRIVER is inconspicuous at
all ""times". Remember that. It's a sure way
to recognize consistent good driving, And if it
isn't consistent, it isn't good;
Apply that definition and you will spot-
light bad driving of every degree; from racing
at 90 m,p.h. with a blaring horn, to cluttering,
upg, windows with dice and baby hoots,
Following too elosely, cutting-in, lane
straddling, passing on curves are all conspicu-
ous—and all bad driving, So is loafing along
a busy highway at 35 m.p;ii.;" delaying hiindreds
by parking on main theroughfares at rush hours;
pumping the horn in a traffic jam; stalling and
bumping when trying to park.
A driver is conspicuous when his name is
called out in police court; when he has to ad-
mit to friends that his licence has been suspen-
ded;' and he is very, very conspicuous when a
crowd gathers to see' him helped out of an auto-
mobile wreck.
Everything' the man-et-the-wheel does that
attracts undue attention is bad driving. "A
good drivdr Is inconspicuous at all times".
PAYS TO BE WATCHFUL
It will be necessary for farmers, and
townspeople alike, when they are asked , to
sign right-of-way across their land, that they
read the fine print, and make use of the rights
which are theirs. Laws are in existence to
protect -the property owner. But they will
only be of use if the property owner knOws
about them and acts accordingly.
We are not trying to suggest that the
gas companies wilfully lower the value of prop-
erty. But, it seems that where the pipelines
are laid, there is a considerable lowering of
property values.
If you need more room for the childrep, more
alaroend convenience for everybody in the
home, a spare room for visitors : . or if you
simply need more space for relaxation, don't
let a shortage of ready cash stop you from
going ahead with building plans now.
You can build an extra room in the attic or
enlarge your house with a B of M Home
Improvement Loan. HIL's are inexpensive —
interest at only 6% per annum — and you
can pay back your loan in
easy monthly instalments.
Why not talk over your
borne improvement plans
with your nearest: B of M
manager. If your proposition
is sound, there's money for
you at the B of M.
