Mr. and Mrs. John Semple atten-
ded the funeral of Mrs. DaVid-
CamPbell at Dorchester on Tues-
day,
„While Sharon Reder was in
school in Bayfield on Friday, she
had the misfortune to fall and
break her leg. Friends hope this
Will not keep her out of school
too long.
People in this vicinity were
shocked to hear of the .sudden
death of Mrs, David Campbell, 56
years, of age. It was just seven
years ago since her husband died
just as suddenlY'from a heart at-
tack. They live at the end of the
6th concessien on Bayfield Road.
She and her daughter Jean, sold
'the farm and went to London to
live. Slie has been teaching school
at Ernbro for the peat few years.
The funeral was held from the
Logan,Funeral Home, London, on
Tuesday.
Vestry Meeting
The annual Vestry meeting of
St. James' Church, Middleton, will
be held Monday evening, January
20, at the home of the rector's
warden, Mr. Donald Middleton,
All members and adherents will
be welcome. The ladies will please
bring lunch.
WA' Meets
The Women's Auxiliary of St.
James' Church, Middleton, met
Wednesday. afternoon, January 8,
at the 'home of Mrs. Bert Bowden
with 22 ladies present.
Mrs. Fred Middleton presided
for the first part of the meeting.
The hymn. "The year is gone be-
yond recall," was sung, Mrs. E.
Wise at the' piano, followed by a
prayer for the. next year, the
member's prayer and the Lord's
Prayer.
Mrs. Middleton thanked all the
members for their wonderful co-
operationk during her trim as pres-
ident; then turned the meeting
over to the rector the R7ev. E. J,
B. Harrison.
Mr, Harrison had the incoming
officers all come forward for the
impressive prescribed service of
dedication, which climaxed with
the singing of the lovely hymn,
"Breathe on me; breath of God."
The rector shook hands with the
officers, with an: appropriate
speech to each one on the dignity
and purpose of her particular of-
fice.
The new president, Mrs. Row-
den, assumed the chair and made

ored to Milton on Sunday where
they visited the former's, brother-
in-law and sister, Mr, and Mrs,
William Powell,
Miss Marion Makins, accomp-
anied by Kenneth Mackie, London,
was with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs, Lloyd Making from Friday
to Sunday.
Mr, and Mrs. Gordon Heard,
London, were in the village over
the weekend.
Lleyd Scotchmer, on his way to
work at RCAF Station Clinton
at five o'clock one morning last
week, was obliged to apply the
brakes to his ear to. avoid bitting
three deer. They ambled across
the road in the moonlight at ,Me-
Ewen's corner. Pupils also report •
that a deer leaped across 'the road
in front of the ODCI bus. in the
township. one day,
Library Board
The annual meeting of the Bay-
field Library Association will be
held at the Library on Monday,
January 2.0, at 2.30 pan. All card
helders to the Library are mem-
bers and the Board urges them to
attend this meeting.
Scouts andl.Cubs
The 'benefit for the Ladies' Aux-
iliary to Scouts and Cubs held in
St. Andrew's: United Church. base-
ment on Prid•ay evening was well
attended.
The first part of the program
was Presented by the young folk
and as each made his. or her bow
to the audience, announced the
name of the number. It was as,
follows; piano solo, ,Sharon Mid-`
dleton; vocal solo, Barbara Turn-
er; piano solo, Sandra Middleton;
Edgar Guests 'poem, "Dirty
Hands" was recited, a verse each.
by Richard Bird, Jimmy Francis,
George Lindsay "and Douglas
Darnborough; .a vocal solb, by
Jacqueline Weston; a skit by Phil
Turner, Michael [Scotchmer, Nigel
Bellchamber and Terry Fitzsim-
ons; piano solo, RoSemary Tur-
land; song, "Little White Duck",
Jimmy Francis, George Lindsay,
Douglas Darnborough, Michael
Scotchmer.
Leroy Path projected pictures
taken by Mrs. Poth, of Scotland,
Western England and the St..Law-
rence River. These beautiful views
were made much more interesting
to the audience by Mrs. Path's,
commentary on her trip.
St. Andrew's Ladies
The. Woman's Missionary Soc-
iety and the.Woman's Association
of St. Andrew's United Church
met at the home of Mrs. Lloyd
Makins on Thursday afternoon
last.
Mrs. H. Rohner, president of
theWMS conducted the meeting
and the topic, "Women of Japan"
was taken by Miss J. Stirling,
who used for her subject material,
in addition to the study book, an
article in Reader's Digest on the
changes in Japan since the war.
The treasurer, Mrs. G. West-
lake reported the financial objec-
tive for the year had been met.
It was, agreed to pack another
,bale for overseas and donations
of new and second.. hand clothing
are solicited. These are to be
handed in during the •next few
weeks.
Mrs. Lindsay Smith, president,
chaired the WA meeting. It com-
menced with the theme song, af-
ter which Mrs. Smith read a por-
tion of Scripture followed by the
topic "Another Way."
A skit on the Woman's Assoc-
iation Family was presented by
Mrs. Lindsay Smith, Misses A. M.
and E. J. Stirling, Mrs. Jack
Scotchmer, Mrs. Robert Scotch-
mer, Mrs. Len Talbot, Mrs'. Bert
Greer and MM.. Lloyd Makins, .
The meeting closed with the
Lord's Prayer. Lunch was ser-
ved by the executive committee.
Willing Workers
The January meeting of the Wil-
ling Workers of St. Andrew's Unit-
ed Church was held on January 8
at the home of Mrs. John Lind-
say. Thirteen members were pres-
ent. The president), Mrs. Grant
Stirling opened the meeting with
the Willing Workers prayer, said
-in unison. Mrs. Stirling's topic
was "Ye shall be my witnesses",
which was followed by a prayer.
Reports were heard of the ac-
tivities of the various committees
for the year,
The gift for the day was brought
by Mrs. J. Scotchmer and received
by Mrs. Logan Cleave. It was de-
cided to work on a quilt at the
home of Mrs. Grant Stirling next
week.
Mrs. C. g. Peacock acted as
chairman for the election of offic-
ers for 1958, The results were as
follows: president, Mrs. Arnold
Makins; first vice-president, Mrs.
Reg. Francis; second vice-presi-
dent, Mrs, Jack Scotchmer; third
vice-president, Mrs. Robert' Blair;
secretary, Mrs. Robert Welsh;
treasurer, Mrs. Walter Turner.
The past president thanked Mrs.
Peacock and the group, and wel-
comed the new president, Mrs. A.
Makins before turning the chair
over to her. Lunch was served by
the committee in charge, after the
meeting had been closed by re-
peating the Mizpah benediction.
The next meeting will be held
on February 12 at the home of
Mrs: Kenneth Brandon.'

letter on this subject and after
discussion it was decided to apply
for one,
After some discussion it was de-
cided to hold a social ' evening
Friday evening, January 31, 'in the
"Tipperary" school, subject to the
trustees' approval. Each member
is asked to bring an article suit-
able for auction to this party.
The committee in charge of the
party arrangements is Mrs, Row-
den, Mrs. O. Cole and Mrs, Grigg.
It was also decided to carry on
the special days donation project
this year.
Mrs, Gordon Steepe conducted a
difficult contest on "trees".
Mr. Harrison closed the meeting
with prayer after which lunch
was served.

Grace' Church held their• regUlar
meeting on Thursday last at the
home of Mrs. Thomas Sowerby.;
The president, Mrs. A. Lockhart
was in charge of the meeting,
Following the opening hymn, Mrs.
Wilmer Harrison led in prayer.
The Scripture lesson and topic
was taken by Mrs. Sowerby. Sec-
retary and treasurer's reports
were given • and correspondence
read. The various committees' re-
ported on their work.
Readings were given by Mrs.
William Townshend and Mrs.
Donald Harris', The remainder r ef
the afternoon was spent quilting.
The meeting closed with the Miz-
pah benediction and the hostess
served lunch.
The. February meeting will be'
at the home of Mrs. William
Townshend
The congregational meeting .of,
Grace church will be held Wed-
nesday afternoon, January 22, -in
the church basement.
VARNA
The skating rink is now in op-
eration and will be open for skat-
ing on Tuesday,. Thursday and
Saturday evenings from 7.30 to
9.3g p.m, The committee are ask-
ing a donation of $1 per family
for the season.

Mission Band
The regular monthly meeting of
the-Mission Band was \held on
January 12. The meeting opened
with the Mission. Band purpose, 29
members answered roll call. Carol
Taylor gave'the :treasurer's report
followed by a"hYrnif,.. Mrs, Taylor
told a story. The Scripture read-
ing, John 15: 12,15, was read by
Bev Hill; Mrs. McAsh led in pray-
er. Offering was received.
