(13y.Carl Hemingway). I tuppose most of you have read the item in the dailies which stat- ed' in effect that the Ontario GOV.- ernment was "withdrawing from Marketing Legislation," The first thing I would call to your attention is the fact that this report was, under the name of a newspapt,ir correspondent, This relieves the Governmnt of being accused of a definite state-ment, As one reads along in the report it is quite evident that the •Farm products Marketing Act and sim- liar and supporting amendments will not be withdrawn. Rather it appears that the Government wishes to give up the responsibil- ity of enforcing it. It is difficult to see how this can be dope as the government is the only source of power for law enforcement, At the present time it is the responsibility. of the producers Marketing Agency to administer the regulations drawn up by the Farm products Marketing Board —a goverpment appointed body. When it • mentions producers "policing their members" the only conclusion would seem to be that Farm Organizations would be ask- ed to name the men they wished to' have on the Farm Products Marketing Board. These men would 't/-en be appointed by the GoVernment, This would seem to be logical, Due to the increased number, and scope of Marketing. Boards in re- cent years it is natural and desire- able that changes should be made in the methods of administration of the Farm Products Marketing Act. Farm organization has been pressing vigorously for these changes.
