Farquhar Oliver' Ursesintreasecl .Suoportor Party ."The Liberal fortunes. are at a low tide, However, we can go home with the assurance that come what may, :Liberalism will revive itself, It is destined to' be- come the party of the people, and speak for the people in high places, think ;we'll have 'a federal election before long and if we do,. I figure that the wily old fox. down in Toronto..will conjure UP' some reason for an election .soon after that, Not that we need one of..conrse,. There are still two years to go in a five year term, "There are too many federal and provincial Liikerals who vote Lib- eral provineially and Tory •Feder., ally, and the other Way around. like to get back to the day when a Liberal was a Liberal, and voted that way for the „party. We should all vow that we'll be Liberal no matter what the elect- ign is," Mr.. OliVer attributed the pros, perity of Ontario since 1934, as the result of what others outside the province ,had produced not to the party in power, He mentioned that with increased gas tax and diesel- fuel tax . and 'logging tax, etc., • the - provincial government would have 860,000,000 new money this *year; and another $50,000,000 more new money .would be corning to Ontario as a result of Frost's agreement with the federal goy- ernment on tax rentals, With that additional 11. million, said Oliver, "they can almost buy their way to victory in any election." He:warned his hearers to realize that roads; bridges and pensioos were not gifts, but a right and the people had paid for them. "You can get all those things without voting Conservative" said the lead- er of the Opiposition. "In Ontario we've paid - the government hom- age, as if to a _father." "The impression you get when talking to people lately," said Oliv- er, -"is that the Diefenbaker gov- ernment will work miracles. Mir- acles have been worked, and will be again, but not by governments". He remarked on the statement by Churchill, federal minister of mines and resources, that "farm- ers should get into the production of livestock". He. termed this a "great pronounce Went for the gov- ernment", and said that as a .farrn, er himself, be certainly didn't want any. more Peopla to get into livestock raising, ge laid the fanners' problem at the feet of the Conservatives, saying, "It u,sed, to be that a .dep- ression on the farm meant a dep- ression in the country, but the drop in percentage of farmers in the country has -changed that, The farmers have been in the middle of a depression for the past three or four years, and this has oat 'been felt in the other walks of life, It is 3USt as important .as ever that the farmer be prosperous, but it is more difficult to get govern- merits to see, that they must •be prosperous. "If the provincial governinent does .aoything for the fawners, it will be a new experience. They have done nothing to relieve the depression. Hepburn paid millions in sucisidies into the formers' pock- ets. Surely it not bad for farmers to accept subsidies when such are going into the pockets of people in all other walks of life. The Ontario government needs to be wakened up to the needs of the farmer. "You know they talk a lot about closure at:Ottawa, They know no- thing about it there, In Toronto, Frost just moves adjournment of the debate, 'with finality." He closed with a call for the rebirth of Liberalism as a treed, not as just a party. He was thank-, ed by Hugh Hill, Goderich. e Three Community 11,13,1.)13.$PAY, SEPTEMBER. 19 Evangelist Pair To Conduct Series of Services Ovangelist. The Tories just haP11-ed to be in a position torean theoben- efits of.. the situation, "It was no one single thing that .defeated the government; but it was a gathering together of fact- Qrs. Neither . leadership or policy in themselves was responsible," Mr. Oliver went on, "To-night we have to admit defeat on both federal and provincial' level, But the Liberal party grew from people like you and I, and if it is to gain in stature, it must once again take into account the ordinary man. "It is my belief that the Liberal party became - too' Conservative, Mere is room for only one tory government in Canada. The Liber- al party is fundamentally one of reform.
