Must Find Way to Discourage Birds
Or Mobile. Phone Service Stopped
If there's a practical way of Apparently ',.the, trouble started
keeping birds off the mobile trans- a short time ago, when, /certain
milting cable stPetching along the guntoting motorists decided to
township road, just off the base- wage war 'on our "feathered'
line road north of Clinton, paral- friends" who were resting their
lel to Highway No. 4, the Bell' weary wings on the Bell comp-
Telephone people would be mighty any's transmitting cable,
pleased to hear about it. The birds escaped injury, but
the cable didn't. Mobile telephone
service was disrupted throughout
the entire area and, on inspection,
telephone men found .22 calibre
slugs buried in the cable.
Since then, both the birds and
Bell Telephone people have been
kept constantly on the hop. No
sooner is the cable repaired than
the birds return, set themselves
up and get fired upon., with the
result that the cable is once more
full of holes.
Recently, a resident working a-
top of her hay-load on the tOwn-
shp, road was compelled to beat
a hasty retreat when bullets start-
ed Eying in her direction. She
reverted later -that a group of
young Men in their late 'teens or
early 'twenties had pulled up in
a car and taken pot-shots at the
birds perched on the cable.
W, W. Haysom, Bell Telephone
manager for this region, said the
situation is a - source of concern;
to his Company and to the mobile
telephone users served' by the
company. "There is nothing wrong
with a little harmless fun," he
said; "but in this case, property
damage, the disruption of vital
service, not to mention the pas-
sibility of injury to residents,
make this a serious matter."
