Bar. ker Family Celebrates $0 Years
Since Emigrating From England
A fiftielli anniversary dinner
was held at Hotel Clinton on
Saturday, May 25, when seven
brothers, Harry, Fred, Charles,
Percy, Ernest, Albert and William
Barker, and their wives, celebrat-
ed the arrival of the Barker fam-
ily from England; one brother
pre -deceased. Two of • the broth-
ers were born in Canada,
The family settled in 'the vicinity
of Clinton where their father and
son Harry worked on the farm of
the late William Perdue, Sr„ sit-
uated on the Bayfield Liixe, Gode-
rich Township, for approximately
one year, while Fred, another son,
worked for John Beacom, also, on
the Bayfield Line.
Starting from a, modest and un-
certain beginning in a strange
land, their courage, hope and in-
tegrity made for them a place in
this country for which much credit
is due ' them. 'People of this type
have been instrumental in building
Canada up to its present greatness
and achievement.
Guests who were honoured in
celebrating ' this happy. occasion
with 'them were Mr. and 'Mrs. W.
E. Perdue and Mrs. John Beacom:,
Clinton. Following an excellent
dinner, after blessing, a toast was'
proposed to the guests by Albert
and responded to by W, E. Perdue,
"In the Garden" and "AUId Lang
Syne" were sting by the group,
accompanied 'by Harry at the
piano, after which a half hour of
reminiscing was enjoyed.
3Vlany incidents were recalled,
both amusing and otherwise, dur-
ing the first year in their new
country. Two minutes' silence was
observed in memory of their mo-
ther, father and brother, and also
in tribute to the late Mr. and
Mrs. William Perdue, Sr. The
benediction was given, and a rem- •
orable evening for the Barkers and
their guests ended,
it is not often that seven broth-
ers remain so closely associated
for a period of 50 years, and con-
gratulations have been received
from many in this district, where
they are well known and esteem-
ed. Albert now resides in London,
William in Stratford and the oth-
er five brothers reside in Gode-
rich, Mr. and Mrs, Barker, Sr,,.
have been deceased for some years,
Lights And Water
Pressure Shut
Off
By RunawayCar
An unknown driver was respon-
sible Saturday night for plunging
about two-thirds of the town in
darkness from 1,30 to 3.30 in the
morning. Interruption of power
put the .water pumps off as well.
A car had apparently been driv-
en around the corner from Vict-
oria Street into William Street,
and it had gine right up the guy
wire to the hydro pole. Before the
wire broke, allowing the car to
drop to, the ground, the weight had
swung the pole, bringing 4,000
volts together. This burned thro-
ugh 'the line, and three primary
wires .dropped to the ground. This
kicked out automatic breakers in
the power house, stopping the
pumps and allowing ,pressure to
fall.
According to J. Rands, super-
intendent of the hydro, this was
what happened, To Constable
!Shaddick, on duty that night,
what happened was a terrific
crash, just before the lights went
out. He roused the PUC work-
men, and helped guide traffic un-
til repairs were made.

Shipments of iron ore from Can-
adian mines in 1955 were 16,445,411
